I'm raising money for my adventure partner, my cuddle buddy, my baby. Delilah is my dog but she is also my best friend! She has a playful spirit and is the sweetest girl I know. She is also in pain, although she hides it well, just as animals do. She cares more about how I'm feeling than she does about herself.
One week after we celebrated her first birthday, she was injured, thank God it wasn't worse! Out of curiosity, she ran up to some horses but they didn't want to play. They tried to shoe her off but In the process stomped her foot. Rather than running off, she took this as a threat. She didn't understand the severity of the situation as she protected herself, she probably also thought she was protecting me.
There was nothing I could do! I could only watch and panic as she was kicked many times. I didn't think she would come out alive. She is tough and resilient. I got her to the car leaving a trail of blood along the way. Without the money to take her to an emergency vet, I took her home to assess the damage.
The bones of her foot weren't broken, only the skin. She walked with a limp. It is healing. She rarely holds it up now. I had to pull an incisor that was hanging by a thread of gum. The root is still there. Several teeth are cracked and broken. I have nursed her the best I can to avoid infection but I cannot fix her teeth on my own. She lost weight quickly. I wet her food to make it more comfortable for her to eat. She drools from the area where her mouth is damaged.
If this were a child, I could have taken her to the ER, even without insurance. It doesn't work the same with veterinarians. But she is my child! Knowing she is in pain hurts my heart! I have to make a way!
No one would know she is in pain at a glance or even spending a day hiking a trail with her. Her jowls cover her teeth. Even though it isn't apparent to others, as a Mother, I see her struggle that she tries so hard to hide.
Even though she is nearly always with me, I am working harder to keep her right by my side to avoid anything like this happening again. I still want her to be able to be a dog though. She does deserve to run and play. Her spirit has not been broken and I hope it stays that way!
