This inspiring event brings together authors, illustrators, and book lovers from North Carolina and beyond, while honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of George Moses Horton—a remarkable poet, Northampton County native, and formerly enslaved individual. Horton’s mother, five older half-sisters, younger brother, and three sisters were also enslaved by William Horton.
As a child, George Moses Horton moved with his enslaver to Chatham County, where he taught himself to read and began composing poetry entirely in his mind. Deeply influenced by the rhythms of Wesleyan hymns, his poetry reflects an extraordinary intellect and creative spirit that flourished despite unimaginable hardship.
As we set our sights on the 2027 festival, we are keenly aware of the pivotal role your support played in our past successes. One lesson learned from previous years is the importance of starting our fundraising efforts early. By beginning now, we can build strong momentum, expand our outreach, and ensure a well-organized and impactful festival.
We are reaching out to longtime supporters and new friends alike to seek initial funding that will help launch our promotional efforts, secure essential deposits, and cover key logistical expenses. Any contribution—no matter the size—will make a meaningful difference.
Also, we have five confirmed authors, but if you would like to recommend any authors who are Northampton County natives, please email me at shelia@mosesbooks.com
