Hi! We’re a family of 3 (2 working adults and a 2 year old boy) who’ve hit a financial wall. I hate asking for handouts and have never done so before so this is really hard for me to do.
My boyfriend of 10 years and I have shared a car our whole relationship. Well, that one car we shared got totaled in an accident a few weeks ago. A dad had let his teenage son drive his car unlicensed and not listed on the insurance policy. His son ran a red light and I T Boned his dads car with our 2 year old in the back seat. I got footage of the accident and my light being green from a nearby business. My MIL paid for the tow and storage fees of our car on her credit card to get it home. I went through the hoops and waited for an answer from the dad’s insurance. While they accept liability they won’t cover the damages to our car, car seat or reimbursement for the tow and storage. No reason as to why just a letter saying there is no coverage for this accident and they “respectfully” deny my claim.
It’s the only way to get ourselves to work which is 20 minutes away from home for my boyfriend and 45 minutes away for me. We live in the mountains of our hometown so public transportation is not easy or close for us.
I’m at a complete loss on what do to. Suing isn't a guarantee to actually see any money to replace our car and reimburse expenses already paid.
I wasn’t expecting a lot. Maybe $4,500 for the value of our car, $400 for the value and replacement of a new car seat and $1,400 for reimbursement to my MIL for paying the tow and storage fees.
As of now, we’re on the hook to pay back my MIL and figure out how to muster up a down payment to finance a new to us car on top of monthly bills.
Any bit would help. I’m in lost desperation mode at this point.
