Hi, my name is Alan, and I'm fundraising for my Syrian family, who has been directly and profoundly affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey.

Seven years ago my cousin and his family escaped the war in Syria in search for a better life in Turkey. Like many Syrian refugees, they yearned for a life without fear of violence and conflict… A place to restart their lives and raise their families

The journey on foot over the snowy mountains into Turkey was treacherous, with some in their traveling group not surviving the trek. But the entire family made it safely and were offered settlement in the refugee camps in Antakya, Turkey, to join over 3.5 million other Syrians seeking safety.

As one would imagine, life in the camp was incredibly hard, but even in desperate conditions, life continues and, in some ways can bring hope.

In the case of my cousin and his family, their hope and love for their family manifested in the birth of their 4th daughter.

Tragically, in the early morning of February 6th, everything changed for this family yet again.

At 4:17am, while the family was asleep, the largest earthquake to hit Turkey in 50 years stole the life of my cousin Feras and his 16 year old daughter Ghazel, both pictured.

Miraculously his wife Dalia and their 3 other daughters, Moore, Tasneem, and Shahd, were rescued from the rubble and survived.

But they are now in a desperate situation, trying to find shelter and sustainability in the midst of destruction, death, and personal loss.

We have felt incredibly helpless and emotional this week as we watch the news and hear the personal stories on the ground, 1000s of miles away, with no way to help, which is why we created this SpotFund.

With the funds we raise here, we intend to provide Dalia and her three girls the resources necessary to ensure their physical and mental health, education, and the hope for a better future. They have suffered and endured more than any family should, and every donation will have a tangible, and positive outcome for this family.

Thank you for considering.

Hello everyone.  It's been just over a month since I originally posted this fundraiser, and I'm still in awe of everyone's generosity through this chaotic ride. I never imagined we would find this much empathy and support from so many people...friends, family, and strangers alike.  Such a welcome thing to see this much love in a world that sometimes seems so brutal and unforgiving!

I'm happy to report that Dalia and her daughters are still safe in Mercine with their own apartment that has been rented for at least six months.  The basics are covered; food, shelter, and clothing, all made possible through your donations and some support on the ground.

The next steps for the family are uncertain.  Will they stay in Mercine longer?  Return to Syria to stay with family?  Or look for immigration opportunities in Europe?  All those questions are in discussion and will be considered in the next few months.  In the meantime, we will use the funds raised here to facilitate their choices... keep them safe and nourished, and provide them with a future that seemed impossible only 30 days ago.

As we move on to the next phase of this journey, I've decided to end this fundraiser this Sunday afternoon (March 26th).  If there are any others you would like to share this with, please do!  Every dollar helps.  But no matter what transpires in the next few days, please know that you've made a material difference in Dalia, Moore, Tasneem, and Shahd's lives.

Much love to all of you,

Alan

As you may have heard, another series of quakes have hit the Syrian/Turkey border.  Both very close to the original epicenters.  The two strongest were 6.4, and 5.8, adding additional destruction and deaths to the already catastrophic situation.  I don't have much information to share other than the most important news that Dalia, her kids, and the rest of my family near these earthquakes are safe.  It sounds like many of the residents who lived near the ocean in both countries are being moved to higher ground for fear of a tsunami triggered by future seismic activity.   I'll share any new updates here once I get them.  In the meantime, thank you again to everyone who has generously shared your kind words and donations.

Hello Everyone.  I can't believe in just a few short days, we are already past the $13k mark!  Simply amazing and humbling, to say the least!

I'm writing to give a quick update that I received confirmation today that Dalia has found a place for her and her family to stay for the next couple of months in Mercine, Turkey, a coastal town about 3 1/2 hours away from the destruction in Antakya.   Everything was lost in the earthquake, including paperwork, IDs, etc.  So she needs to work through that administrative mess before she makes her next move for a more long-term living situation.  The good news is that their basic needs are met for now.  We will continue to check in with her frequently and will distribute more funds when necessary.

I'll also provide periodic updates here while the fundraiser continues.

Best,

Alan

Hello everyone. I can't tell y'all enough how incredibly amazed we are at the initial interest, generosity, and support!  It hasn't even been 24 hours and we are already close to $10k!  I'm writing to share that we have been successful in sending an initial monetary contribution direct to Dalia, so she has resources for her and her family's basic needs.  Our plan moving forward is to send out measured amounts on a bi-weekly to monthly basis (still figuring out the best cadence) to provide consistent support as they navigate their mid and longer-term plans.  We also prefer to send it out in parts to ensure every dollar we send is successfully received.  It's a chaotic situation there, and the traditional infrastructure to send money isn't fully back online, so we are operating with careful urgency.

We plan to keep this fundraiser up for another 2-4 weeks.  The end goal is to provide a fund that will last a year (or more???), depending on the final total.

Again, thank you to everyone who has already donated.  You are royalty.
