“Life is sweetest when it’s lived outside” - Dave
Feeling the wind in your mustache, working out whether there will be turbulence at altitude, or wondering if you should trim the sails. Dave is always enjoying the experience, challenge, and the beauty of the minutia and the moments in between.
Just when you feel like you’re in a sweet spot in life, you sometimes find yourself flying too close to the sun (and a broken neck will certainly bring you back to earth). A week ago, while in the Caribbean, Dave fractured his C4 and C5 vertebrae, and sustained a spinal cord injury. He has limited ability to move his arms and lost mobility in his legs and feet. From the shoulders down, Dave has some feeling sensation. Each day we are learning what nerves were affected by an injury of the spinal cord in this location.
In true David fashion, he has not let his injury or the 2 neck surgeries within 24 hours that followed his accident, change his upbeat spirit, joy, or ability to crack jokes. However, the road to rehabilitation will be a long and uncertain one. There is no guarantee that feeling / movement will be restored and it will be a waiting game for the spinal cord to repair itself and heal. We are fervently hoping for the best, and preparing for the worst.
He is currently in the ICU at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Hopefully, this week he will be moved into the inpatient rehab center to build on what is still working, and learn how to use his new body. Dave and Amelia will be in Miami, FL for the foreseeable future.
We wanted to create this space as a tangible way for friends, family, strangers-now-friends, unknowns, and those still to be known to support us in this crazy life change.
The funds raised here will be used to help cover immediate needs such as soul healing food, what is sure to be enormous medical bills, surprise expenses, and maybe even a sweet set of wheels.
On behalf of Dave, Amelia, and our family, thank you all so much for all the love and support we’ve already been surrounded with. Thank you for walking with us during this new season of life (apart from Dave, he can’t walk 😉)
