My family and I think this is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Camp I Am Special. Located in Fruit Cove, Camp I Am Special is an in-person camp for children, teenagers, and adults with intellectual and developmental differences and other disabilities.
My son, Austen, who is on the Autism spectrum and has developmental delays, first attended Camp I Am Special in 2022. Like all campers, Austen was assigned a Buddy who spent the week with him, and they did a wide range of wonderful camp activities. There is a staff of volunteers who work hard to make camp fun and celebrate the campers' special qualities.
This summer, camp will run over the course of seven weeks with approximately 32 campers per week. Catholic Charities, which runs Camp I Am Special, keeps costs as low as they can for families. Campers and their families pay $725 for a week of sleepaway camp, and it costs Catholic Charities more than double that per camper.
Money raised will be given to Catholic Charities for Camp I Am Special.
