This past May, Texas experienced some historic rainfall coupled with some devastating flooding.
At least nine people have died in Texas since Memorial Day due to excessive flooding. Thousands more have been evacuated or lost their homes.
"It’s scary, we have never had anything like this before,” said Mary Hernandez of Richmond in metropolitan Houston.
Two weeks ago, The National Weather Service reported 16.62 inches of rain fell in a single day in Brenham, shattering a previous one-day record of 10.38 inches set back in 1994. Some parts of the state received more than 30 inches of rain in a single day.
For southeast Texas, this is at least the sixth major flood in just the past 12 months.
Meteorologist Eric Holthaus reported that 183,000 square miles were under flash flood warnings last Thursday, June 2nd. That’s an area the size of Germany an England combined.
Austin experienced rainfall that was 390% above its normal rate this past May.
