Elephant Nature Park, or ENP, is a sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand, that rescues abused and exploited elephants. The laws in Thailand regarding the treatment of elephants are underdeveloped. Many elephants are captured as babies, and "tamed" in a practice known as "the crush". They are tied to a pole for a week, starved, and harmed by bull hooks. This makes them subservient to their trainers out of fear. Once an elephant is considered trained, they are sent to trekking camps, illegal logging camps, cities, and so on to be used as labor and entertainment. This does irreparable harm to an elephant's mental and physical health. ENP raises funds to take elephants out of these situations, and give them comfortable lives, free from chains and bull hooks. I volunteered here over the summer, and saw the progress first hand. However, many of the elephants at ENP are either physically or mentally scarred. I plan on raising funds for ENP to help them pay for medicine and elephant rescues. These elephants get a new chance at life, and I want them to be as comfortable as possible.
