Honoring Sylvia M. Martin: Cherished by So Many
Some people enter our lives and become family, not because of blood, but because of the love they give, the lives they touch, and the space they create for others.
Sylvia was one of those extraordinary people.
To her children, she was Mom. To so many others, she was Sylvia — a bonus mother, a dear friend, a loyal confidant, a source of love, and someone whose presence made people feel like family.
Sylvia gave her time, leadership, care, and energy to the people around her. Now, we have an opportunity to surround her family with that same generosity and collective support.
As we come together to honor her life and legacy, we are reaching out to family, friends, loved ones, and the extended community whose lives she touched to help provide the loving and dignified farewell she deserves.
Your contribution, regardless of the amount, will help ease the financial responsibilities her family now faces, including funeral and burial services and the family’s immediate needs during this difficult transition. If you cannot give financially, sharing this campaign is a meaningful way to honor her memory.
Sylvia’s commitment to commUNITY was reflected in a lifetime of leadership, generosity, and service. She was actively involved with the Lions Club, Elcor Community Center, Community Board 4, Helping Hands, Friends of the Library (where she created Spellabration), and the LeFrak City Tenants Association. She also served as an educator at Corona Bible Baptist Church and as a private tutor.
Her generosity extended into the holiday seasons, when she participated in serving the community at Thanksgiving and collected and stored toys throughout the year for the annual Christmas gift giveaway.
For a woman who meant so much to so many, this is an opportunity for us to come together in love, gratitude, and collective support.
If Sylvia ever touched your life, made you feel welcome, or simply made you smile, we invite you to honor her memory through a contribution or by sharing this campaign.
It takes a village to raise a child. Sometimes, it takes that same village to honor a legend.
With heartfelt gratitude, thank you for helping us give Sylvia the homegoing she deserves and her family room to begin again.
