Hello, my name is Jailene Bustillo. I am 11 years old and I am from the Bay Islands of Honduras, I have been diagnosed with sequelae of hypoxic neonatal-ischemic encephalopathy. I am currently taking 3 different medications (Lamotrigine 125mg, Keppra 100mg and Lacotem 50mg every 12hrs) for seizures. I have had 11 seizures in the past 3 months, every episode causes damage to my brain that leads me to weeks of therapy, hospitalization and even sedatives . Physiotherapy is part of my daily routine to recover the strength in my body and mitigate the damages caused by the seizures. My ability to walk and stand by myself has been diminished.

It has been a dificult time for me and my family , but I am not giving up! We have been blessed with the oportunity to travel to the United States, searching for new hope. With your help I will be able to cover the travel, medical, and further treatment expenses that we will incur.
Treatment in Honduras has not improved my situation, but we rely on this opportunity, to recover my childhood and life back. We have been granted a medical VISA for my travel to the U.S. The necessary funds to travel and seek medical care are the only things holding up my treatment.

Thank you in advance for your donation and support.

May God Bless you
With love , JJ.

We are happy to give you an update on Jailene. We have been so blessed with the medical care Jailene has received in New Orleans. We are thankful for your support, which allowed us to have her evaluated with the latest technologies in the U.S. Her primary physician in New Orleans is originally from Tegucigalpa but studied medicine in New York and one of her caseworkers is from La Ceiba ~ what a small world!

They have been very attentive to Jailene's needs and have ordered a lot of tests over the past few days. She had another MRI yesterday which showed no tumors or cysts. That is good news, as it means no surgery is needed. However, the MRI did show that she has softening in areas of her brain (encephalomalacia) that are most likely caused by a lack of oxygen at birth. The left side of her brain is more greatly affected than the right side.

They believe these injured areas in her brain are what is causing the seizures. We have another doctor's appointment this week but what they have told us so far, is that she will need to remain on the expensive anti-seizure medications. They are $500/month in Honduras but they do seem to be effective so we must continue them. She will also need to continue with both physical and occupational therapy. We will have appointments with therapists in New Orleans in the coming days and will keep posting updates as we learn more.

Thank you again to all of you for your support, prayers and good wishes. We are sincerely thankful!
