Over 100 million people are blind or severely visually impaired due to untreated cataracts.
Although cataract surgery is the most common medical procedure in the world, millions of people lack access to surgeons and cost-effective solutions, making cataracts the leading cause of blindness, mostly in the developing world. This blindness leads to economic hardship, additional health issues, and a shorter lifespan.
HelpMeSee is on a mission is to eliminate the global scourge of unnecessary blindness caused by cataract by training cataract specialists in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) in significant numbers, to meet the increasing demand for surgical services in the communities impacted by cataract blindness.
To deliver this large-scale training, HelpMeSee has developed the Eye Surgery Simulator, a virtual representation of the eye, that uses computer graphics, physics modeling, motion controls, and tactile-feedback, to look and feel like real eye surgery. When the simulator is paired with HelpMeSee’s comprehensive curriculum, the trainee will be skilled in cataract surgery long before operating on live a patient.
HelpMeSee is working with partners to build training centers with these simulators, around the world where cataract blindness is prevalent. The specialists trained on MSICS will stay in their communities to provide affordable, high-quality eye treatment delivering a truly sustainable solution to the cataract blindness health crisis. But, they still need your help.
Most specialists who treat the cataract blind today receive little in the way of financial support. Many cover the costs of equipment and resources on their own. Their work is an altruistic endeavor.
Many are ready to help. The solution to this problem of cataract blindness exists. We only need your support to assist those who deliver this care to see it through.
