This fund will be in direct support for a local (to Houston) black single teenager who is in need of Doula services & Childbirth Education. Any excess funds donated will go towards Harmonious Birthing Community Services (Non Profit Orgaization) to help other POC in need of childbirth services.
Why consider donating?
Black women in the US have a mortality and morbidity rate that is 3-5x higher than white and non POC counterparts, no matter their education or income level. This is due to implicit bias, explicit bias, and overall instutionalized racism. Unfortunatley, outcomes for a black teenager are often worse, and they tend to have less support and a more stressful pregancy. The stress a single, black teen may face during pregnancy often results in premaure births and low birth weight babies.
Studies have shown that Doulas can decrease the chances of the following: low birth weight babies, birth complications, cesarean births, preterm births, and more. With the current mortality rate amongst black women, doulas of POC can be considered a neccesity.
Unfortunatley, everyone may not have the funds to pay for a Doula. Please consider donating ANY amount towards this fund. If you are an ally or advocate for black maternal health, please feel free to share on all of your platforms along with donating.
