This is Tony. Not long ago, he began having serious trouble breathing.
At first, we had no idea what was wrong. His breathing became increasingly difficult, and we rushed him to the veterinary clinic.
What followed was a long and frightening search for answers.
Tony underwent six X-rays, an ultrasound, blood tests, and examinations by several veterinarians. Doctors discovered a large amount of fluid inside his chest that was putting severe pressure on his lungs.

They had to drain an incredible 310 mL of fluid from his chest.
For such a small cat, it was an enormous amount.
After the fluid was removed, the veterinary team could finally see how severely one of Tony's lungs had been compressed. It was struggling to fully expand again, and Tony needed three hours of oxygen support while the doctors monitored him and helped stabilize his breathing.
Further testing showed that the fluid collecting inside his chest was chyle — lymphatic fluid.

After extensive diagnostics, Tony was diagnosed with idiopathic chylothorax, a serious condition in which lymphatic fluid leaks into the chest cavity and surrounds the lungs. In Tony's case, despite all the testing, the doctors still do not know why the leak started.
That uncertainty is one of the hardest parts.
The fluid can build up again, so Tony now needs continued veterinary care, monitoring, repeat imaging, medications, and further treatment depending on how his condition develops.
We have already done everything we can to get him this far, but his emergency treatment and continued care are becoming more than we can manage alone.

oxygen therapy
medications and monitoring
follow-up imaging and continued treatment
Tony has already been through so much just to be able to breathe normally again.
