The first thing most parents want to know about their unborn baby is whether the baby is healthy. When parents learn about a baby’s birth defect in the prenatal period, they are often devastated. Learning that your baby will require hospitalization or multiple medical interventions after birth represents a loss of the life you imagined having with your new child.
A few months ago, during our anatomy scan, our baby was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Essentially, only one half of the heart has developed. Without a series of open heart surgeries, this condition is fatal. The first surgery will be within a week of delivery, then around 6 months, and lastly between 4-5 years. Although there is no cure, these surgeries will help the baby’s heart to function as normally as possible with a missing ventricle. Asking for help is totally out of our comfort zone but if we have learned anything so far, it’s that sometimes you need to lean on your family and friends for help. With upcoming medical bills, travel costs, and time out of work- we could really use any help we can get. We understand that not everyone is able to make a monetary donation, and we appreciate the prayers and good vibes just as much ❤️
