In May 2022, at the age of 34, Patrick (Pat) Behan was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. While this has been a devastating diagnosis for everyone involved, Pat and those around him - his family and his close friends - have chosen to fight this disease head-on and formed Behan Strong.
Pat is a former college basketball player whose life’s work is coaching basketball in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. He is currently serving in his 6th year as the head boy’s basketball coach at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C.
All donations from this fundraiser will go to the Patrick Behan Support Trust to provide financial support for Pat's care and help him fight this battle. Every dollar matters. To learn more about Pat visit www.behanstrong.
Thank you for all of the love and support! #ENDALS
*Following Pat’s ALS diagnosis, he moved from his home in Alexandria, VA to an apartment in Washington, DC in order to reduce the travel distance to St. John’s, but more importantly, live safely in a fully ADA compliant building. This came at a monthly housing increase of $2500. After Pat was diagnosed with ALS, he had to step down from his full time teaching position and enroll in social security.
*It is recommended that ALS patients receive support from occupational and physical therapists as the disease progresses. Insurance may cover 1-2, one hour sessions a week but this is not enough. Occupational therapy aids in supporting someone with ALS in learning how to adapt to changes in personal care and mobility— something most of us take for granted.
