This is a heartbreaking situation. It’s not just a home repair gone wrong; it’s a total loss of security caused by a predatory contractor.
Helping Teri Rebuild: From Contractor Nightmare to a Safe Home.
We are reaching out to you today because a friend, Teri, is facing a housing crisis that no one should ever have to endure. What began as a standard roof replacement has turned into a multi-year nightmare that has left her home structurally compromised and her finances depleted.
The story:
Teri had put a lot of time and money into upgrading and remodeling her home. Then, the roof sprung a leak. She filed an insurance claim and hired a contractor. After paying the contractor in full to replace her roof, the work was never completed. For over a year, her home sat exposed to the elements. The consequences were catastrophic; severe water damage caused by rain and snow which poured through the ceiling and down inside the walls, eventually reaching the foundation. In -40° temperatures, the water-soaked foundation cracked, and caused a shift which broke the window closest to it. Her ceilings and walls began disintegrating. Water even poured in around the framing of the exterior doors.
Because the roofing was not touched for a year, black mold festered in her addition, forcing the demolition of it. When he did begin work on the main roof, against professional advice, the contractor removed her chimney pipe. Thus, rendering her fireplace out of code and permanently unusable. It subsequently had to be removed. The roof was covered with fabric and ice/water, then left. After 11 months without a roof, a crew finally began to install metal, only to drill the metal sheeting incorrectly, ruining the entire lot of materials.
Teri has fought every step of the way for 4 years. She retained an attorney who helped her file a claim with the contractor's insurance. However, the contractor’s insurance denied the claim due to damages beginning before the policy period. (In other words, he didn't provide proper insurance.) Her own insurance company threatened to drop her because the repairs remained unfinished. To save her from losing insurance and save her home from possibly being condemned, she took out an emergency loan and borrowed from friends to hire a new roofer. She had to pay half up front and is now paying $500 a month for the next two years just to pay off the roof—leaving her with nothing left to fix the rest of the damages the contractors negligence caused. The missing walls, the ceilings, the gutters, and the cracked foundation need to be fixed.
Currently, the cost of repairs and restoration exceeds the total value of her home. She has been "fleeced" by a negligent contractor and left in a house that is a shell of what it once was.
How You Can Help:
Teri is always helping others, even when faced with her own adversity. Now, she is the one in need. We are raising funds to help her:
Cover the monthly loan payments for the new roof. Repair the interior walls and ceilings destroyed by water and mold, restore the foundation and gutters to prevent further structural decay, rebuild the demolished addition, and alleviate the massive financial burden caused by this contractor's negligence.
Any contribution, no matter how small, goes directly toward giving Teri her life and her safety back. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this story to help us reach others.
Thank you for your kindness, your prayers, and your support.
Any excess funds will be given to others this contractor has defrauded. (She is not the only one.)
