Autumn's Journey to a New Liver

Since the age of twelve, Autumn has been battling an autoimmune liver disease, Autoimmune Hepatitis. Over time, it has progressed and now she needs a liver transplant to survive. The symptoms began with extreme chronic fatigue and headaches.  By the age of 26, flare-ups became more regular and severe. From the time of diagnosis, doctors told her at some point she would need a liver transplant. With a healthy and active lifestyle, Autumn has been able to prolong the transplant need until now. Over the past two years, Autumn’s health has changed drastically, and her quality of life has suffered. It is now imminent that she needs a liver transplant to live.

A note from Autumn…

Dear Friends & Family,

I wanted to say first and foremost, the love, kindness and encouraging words I have received from so many of you have been truly powerful and impactful. They added so much brightness to my day to day and I appreciate all of you so much.

I want to share a glimpse of what a typical week has looked like for me over the last year or so. I’ve always been very energized and charged and truly love working and being busy.

As of lately, I haven’t had the same kind of energy I’ve had in the past. Within two weeks I can easily be in the hospital for visits, labs or transfusions at least two to five times. So with that and all the hospital stays and just the inability to stay healthy long enough, I haven’t been able to work and it has been very challenging for me. This has been a completely new change for me, and something that was not necessarily wanted or welcomed.

Some big changes…

  • Doctors want me to rest a lot more. Due to swelling, I must elevate my legs throughout the day a lot.
  • Daily, I try to get some stuff done around the house, but some days are easier some days are harder.
  • I’ve always loved to work out, and can’t really do it the same anymore, if at all.
  • Due to fluid buildup, I constantly experience shortness of breath and fatigue and must take more and more breaks.
  • My energy level has decreased which has resulted in a lot of muscle atrophy.
  • Due to my kidney issues, I am on a strict low-sodium diet. This has been very hard because I am not allowed to have just any food. Meal prepping is a must, and if not, symptoms will get worse. Going out to eat isn’t really an option for me currently.
  • I am required to get lab work weekly.
  • I regularly undergo a two-to-five-hour paracentesis and transfusions depending on the day.
  • Numerous doctor’s appointments are my new normal.  This includes about every three weeks blood transfusions; every two weeks an albumin (or whatever else is needed); countless ultrasounds and bloodwork; daily monitoring and updating doctors weekly (or more if needed).
  • In the last year, I have been hospitalized for more than four week-long stays. In addition to many emergency room visits.
  • My mom is living with us to help however she can. She and Kyle help keep the house in order and take me to some of my appointments.
  • Our dog, Griffey, needs exercise and care which has been getting more difficult for me (and the family) to manage too.

With love and gratitude,

Autumn Grable

Please find it in your heart to give to Autumn's fund. This will help in countless ways. The fund will be used to assist with the increasing medical bills, expenses to/from medical appointments, expenses to improve quality of life, assistance to maintain her home, and all expenses related to her care and needs during and after her liver transplant when that day comes.

We will continue to post updates on Autumn's journey.

Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

Update from Autumn…

Currently, at Mayo for my 4 month check up! Just got in late last night with Kyle. Yesterday, I had my much needed paracentesis to remove fluid. They removed 3 liters which is a lot for me - about 7 pounds!  Their plan moving forward is continuing paracentesis as needed- which is about every 2 weeks. I will have to drive to Mayo for that 😕. Also doing some testing and procedures while I’m here to figure out why that keeps happening.

I was scheduled for a liver biopsy but thankfully, doctors determined it was not needed. However, stent is being removed today at 1:00.

Additionally, while here, I’ve been doing lots of labs, x rays, ultrasounds, infusions, and appointments with everyone. Ultrasound is looking better which is positive, as well as, labs and x rays.

The thought is that my liver just needs to keep growing so it can do its a job. How long that’ll take, it’s hard to know or guess. So continuing and pushing high protein and food and fluids, and managing the increase in the ascites as it comes and hoping it continues to improve!

So just a journey, and continuing to be patient and just giving it all some time.

***please continue to keep Autumn in your thoughts and help provide support to her and the family as she continues to face the ups and downs, challenges and victories.***

Update from Autumn…

Doing better as far as energy and lab work, and getting stronger every day. It’s definitely a marathon not a sprint, but grateful for to be home and moving forward!

I have been dealing with the ascites a lot and that’s causing a lot of discomfort at nights especially. Last Tuesday, I had a paracentesis at Iowa. They were able to remove 3 L of fluid, which was a ton for me =to 8lbs!!! It definitely provided some relief, but I am pretty sore and tired from it this round.

My liver numbers have been great which is huge, and I’ve been able to really start walking and doing some form of exercise.

My immune system and wbc have dropped quite a bit lately from the meds but that is to be expected. So lots of hand washing!

On another note, I’ve been baking a lot and did a little open house/ taste testing with some friends nearby in Iowa.  So I’m excited to launch an at home bakery business to do personal orders and be a vendor for farmers markets or events. Kyle and myself have been working on the website now, and my sister-in-law Amanda has been working on all the design and logo and branding. So that’s been a lot of fun. Something fun I can try and do!

All the continued love and prayers are so appreciated and can’t wait til I’m back full go!

************

Financial, Autumn and Kyle are just trying to play catch-up. The initial support they received definitely helped pay for a lot of the boarding, day-to-day needs, and some travel. The hardest part now is paying for general daily living expenses, mortgage, and hospital bills that are continually coming in along with new bills from follow ups and more procedures.

Every $1 helps as they work to create a healthy joy filled life without the crippling medical debt they are now facing.

Update from Autumn....

Hi family and friends!!!
I am so beyond excited to make this post. I have received confirmation from Mayo that I have a living donor match, and I will be having my liver transplant surgery on Feb 24 at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

I wanted to say how thankful I am for the love, support, prayers, calls and texts I have received from so many of you. It has gone such a long way and been so encouraging on the hard days.

Social media has been so powerful in this, and although hard to share, has been an answer to so many prayers. I want to thank  Heather Hanson Boyle for looking into this and deciding to give me the ultimate gift and donate a part of her liver to me. It is truly life changing. Words can’t express how thankful I am to you and your familly.  Even years after coaching your amazing daughter, I never imagined our paths would cross again in this way. The gymnastics community is truly amazing.

I wanted to share this news with you all, as I feel like so many of you are part of my journey. Continued prayers are always appreciated, and I will try and update you all on progress and changes as I can 🙂

UPDATE FROM AUTUMN...

A little overview and update of the day and the past couple weeks!
Over Christmas break, I was beyond grateful to have felt so good. I honestly haven’t had a week like that in so long and it was really amazing that all my procedures and everything just worked out at such good time. Spending time with family and friends was amazing, and I always want to stay longer and see more people.

But over the past couple weeks, my labs have been a little more unstable so some the infusions and treatments had to be changed and stopped for a little bit to get things under control.

This past weekend and yesterday I started to feel really bad, and then this morning I woke up and was just having a hard time taking in a full deep breath without coughing or pain. Luckily they got me in today instead of Thursday ( which is what’s I was originally scheduled for).
I arrived 9:30 and they did labs and started my iv and ordered a chest x ray. I then headed to the procedure room where I had my paracentesis, and then while in there, the chest x ray came back and it showed that some of my fluid was now in my pleural space which is why I was having a hard time with breathing. So I had a new procedure done, a thoracentesis, and they were able to remove 1 liter off of my lung area which should help.
Then it was up to the treatment room, for lasix, albumin, and because my hemoglobin was low, red blood cells. So finally left around 4:45 and headed home. Long day but very grateful for the nurses and doctors who spent all that time with me today and got me taken care of so quick.

Please continue to pray and share Autumn's story as she continues her fight and journey for a new liver.
