As many of you are aware, my 5 year old niece, Josie was in school at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan on March 12th, when a targeted attack was made on the Jewish community. The immediate aftermath and the weeks since the event have been incredibly difficult for my brother’s family, as well as so many families in their community as they navigate both the emotional impact and the logistical challenges following the synagogue’s temporary closure/relocation.
Jewish community is extremely important to so many of us. My niece Josie attended preschool at the synagogue, and was enrolled there for camp this summer. Unfortunately, due to the extent of the damage to the synagogue they have been unable to attend school since the event, and just returned to a temporary location. In addition to this, they were recently informed that the camp will not be able to operate this summer. With the summer synagogue program no longer an option, so many kids and families in the community are scrambling to make plans for summer childcare.
Between time taken off from work and the need for temporary childcare solutions over the last month and a half, things have become a challenge both financially and with scheduling for so many of these families!
I would love to support Josie having a "normal" enjoyable summer (which will include some time here in our NJ Jewish community!), as well as helping to support the impacted families as they work to navigate these tough times and work to rebuild the Temple Israel community during this emotionally complicated time.
