My best friend is currently going through what most would consider their worst nightmare. When my twin sister had her baby, she was kept in the NICU for 3 days until she was cleared to go home. To our family this was a small miracle, but what I have realized as a physician myself is this outcome is rare.
Wow, time stood still as we cherished the arrival of the newest, most perfect creation. "I can't stop snuggling her." She was PERFECT.
Imagine yourself, as not only a physician, but a surgeon, watching your child develop compartment syndrome.
Ultimately she had to be transferred to another hospital for emergency surgery after she just gave her last cell of energy to delivering her full term, otherwise healthy daughter. What a heart break. What does this mean? Why did this happen? What is the recovery? Endless questions.
Meanwhile, she just gave birth to this perfect looking baby. She is hurting, physically and emotionally, more than ever. She hasn't eaten and at this point is dehydrated. You're trying to be there for eachother, supporting her and her husband. Imagine trying to answer everyone's texts and calls while also calming your own worries.
Suddenly you realize that you do not have all of the answers. While feeling weak and defeated by life's most recent events you realize that some kind of higher power has your baby's future and recovery in its hands. While you know so much, you cannot predict the future. This WILL make you stronger and you WILL get through it.
