Disabled Cable is a collective of disabled drag performers, producers, and our allies committed to carving out a space for our community in Los Angeles’s queer nightlife scene. Disabled performers are often pushed to the sidelines or faced with the (unspoken, but present) expectation that they will neglect their accessibility needs in order to continue displaying their art form. We aim to be a show that puts accessibility front and center and celebrates the incredible range of talent that can be found when you allow disabled performers to show up exactly as they are. We also want to create a safe space for disabled audience members, especially as we are still in the midst of a deadly and disabling pandemic. To reflect this, Disabled Cable will be a masks-required show, we will have a stock of KN95 masks for those who need them and we will also be working on getting our hands on rapid tests as well.
Our fundraising goal reflects the funds needed to pay our performers, DJ, and ASL interpreters, as well as rent chairs for our space and provide beverages to the audience. We’re partnering with Cantiq LA, a lingerie shop in Echo Park, who has graciously offered us the use of their space. The first show will be proof-of-concept, and with the hopes of being able to turn this into a monthly event!
The first show will be Saturday, March 23rd provided we secure adequate funding in time. We also plan to stream the show on Twitch for those who cannot attend in person!
First 20 people who donate $25 or more to this fund will be able to claim a goodie bag with $35 worth of non-sized Cantiq products as a thank you! Please reach out to my drag account (leonatheleo on Instagram) so that we can get that to you asap!
