Today, 4/4/2023, I almost lost my service dog who has been my lifeline for the past three years. I currently live with Postal Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, POTs and Athena has been trained to provide blood pressure and heat rate alerts, deep pressure therapy, and reconcious acts (help wake me up in times when I pass out). She has saved me on a daily basis and without her I would not know what to do.
When Athena is not working, she is the biggest goofball and loves being with her cat sister Ashoka. She loves just being in the room with us and will be your best friend forever if you give her a piece of popcorn! Even when she is "off the clock" she still is there for not only me but has even help others during their stress episodes, showing that she wants to help even when not working.
Athena woke up very dehydrated and lethargic which caused her to be rushed to the emergency vet. When we arrived, they told us that if we had waited any longer Athena would not have had a fighting chance to make it to the end of the day. She is currently in critical condition and will be spending a few days at the emergency vet to hopefully get back to feeling better. After running some test, the vet believes that has developed Addison's disease, Hypoadrenocorticism, a condition where the adrenal glands are unable to produce enough hormones to regulate life sustaining functions like electrolytes, blood pressure, hydration, metabolism and stress responses. With this diagnosis, Athena will now be on monthly medication for the rest of her life.
We are trying our best to come up with the funding to cover all of the expenses, I even put a title loan on my car but it still is not enough to cover everything. We would really appreciate any help that you can provide and are thankful that you are taking the time to hear out our story.
