On Halloween Day of 2023 I was riding down a street when a beautiful, sad, very pregnant German Shepherd dog walked in front of my vehicle. I stopped and called her over so I could drive through. She walked to my driver door and looked up at me with the most pitiful expression. She looked hopeless and defeated. I got out and sat with her for a while.
I spoke with residents in the area. They told me she's a stray dog and has lived in the wooded area across the street since she was a puppy. They said she learned if she walks in front of cars the cars will stop and people put her food on the side of the road for her to move. That's how she was getting her food. They said they had called animal control several times and every time she sees them, she runs. They said the neighborhood calls her Katie. On this particular day, it was getting down into the low 30s overnight. He said no one planned on taking her inside that night.
We got Katie and took her immediately to the veterinary office. The doctor thought her pregnancy looked well and according to X-ray, told us to expect a minimum of 10 puppies within the week. She had no microchip. She was very malnourished.
We got her set up at home comfortably and started building her trust. My son and I sat with her and laid with her for hours and hours comforting her. He and I finally started gaining her trust.
Katie very slowly began wagging her tail minimally when myself or my son would come home. She still cowers down at others. She has since opened up to two of my three other dogs. She is an incredible girl.
Katie delivered her puppies on November 3, 2023. She delivered 11 beautiful and healthy puppies. She was phenomenal through delivery and continues to be an incredible mother to her babies.
This is where we need help. Once she finishes nursing, Katie needs medical care. All the puppies will need shots and normal puppy medical care. We would love to send the babies to their adoptive families with a spay or neuter voucher as well. For these things, we are asking for monetary donations.
Medical care for each puppy has been quoted at $400 per puppy.
Medical are for Katie has been quoted at or just over $1000.
Thank you for taking the time to read our rescue story. Thank you in advance for anything you can contribute, even if it's only prayers or just a share. We sincerely appreciate you!! I know Katie is most grateful.
