A few years ago, my sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a condition that requires constant vigilance and round-the-clock management. Even with today’s advanced medical technology, she continues to struggle with regulating her blood sugar levels. Dangerous highs and lows can happen quickly and sometimes without warning especially during sleep.
After extensive research, she discovered a program called Above the Standard Dog Training, a company that breeds and trains diabetic alert service dogs. These specially trained standard poodles can detect rising and falling blood sugar levels long before monitors or alarms alert their handler. Even more importantly, these dogs can wake their handler in the middle of the night during dangerous low blood sugar events providing a level of safety, independence, and peace of mind that technology alone simply can’t offer.
Unfortunately, service dogs, their training, and the associated costs are not covered by health insurance. The total cost is substantial.
That’s why I’m starting this GoFundMe, to help offset the cost of this life-changing and potentially life-saving service dog. Every donation, no matter how small, brings her one step closer to greater safety, independence, and a better quality of life.
