So, my friend, who we’ll refer to as PrivacyProtected just received an order to appear before an immigration judge in Orlando to review her asylum case. I don’t know how much it costs to take off work to buy gas to hire an attorney and hang out in an Orlando hotel, but I imagine it takes a lot of hours of working a kitchen to pay that bill. My friend is really everyone’s friend at the Cracker Barrel in Alcoa. She effortlessly infuses joy into our kitchen as well as the hundreds of pounds of food that our community enjoys every single one of her work weeks. This week, she won’t be working though. She’ll be driving south, stressed and scared. She speaks about as much English as I do Spanish, which isn’t much. When asked her how safe she would really feel if her family(hubby + 2 small kids) were sent back to Honduras, she didn’t really understand what I was asking. However, when I typed the question into an interpreter and she was able to read it, words weren’t necessary for her communicate her fear. In fact, she couldn’t hide it. I don’t know enough to even consider the potential outcomes of her hearing, but I do know that empowering her with a few extra resources would at least offer as small measure confidence and maybe even a little peace of mind. Being quite cash poor at the moment myself, I’m unable to alleviate this financial burden in any meaningful way on my own. Good thing I’m not alone. She’s a joyful asset who is traveling with several letters of recommendation, but the cold hard fact is it’s really expensive.
