In Little Italy, where green space is hard to find, residents are fighting to save a cherished garden on city-owned land from development.
Elizabeth Street Garden, a green pocket between Elizabeth and Mott streets in Little Italy, is a through lot that residents have developed into a tranquil space for relaxation and community programming.
The former public school site had been promised first for a new public school in the 1970s and then an open space in the 1980s. In 1991, a neighborhood resident leased the debris-strewn lot from the city, planted trees and installed the first of many sculptures that populate the garden’s lawns. More recently, the local community and almost every elected official has asked that the space be permanently saved as a NYC Park.
Now, the city is seeking to develop the garden into ground-floor retail and affordable senior housing, even though an alternative nearby site would provide 5x as much housing.
Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden is working to preserve the garden as a unique public green, open space and NYC Park. You can save the Elizabeth Street Garden by donating today.
Winner will receive a $200 gift certificate to Chef's Club restaurant and an Atelier Perfume package. Winner will be announced here on March 7th.
