Greetings community, I am KazMo Universe, known to many as Monét from various educational communities, including KIPP, Trinity HS, LINK unlimited and Illinois State University. I've changed my name and title throughout my journey, and I might have crossed paths with some of you as KazMo during performances, vending art at local markets, as well as my involvement in Chicago dance and theater communities. Each interaction has been significant to my growth, and now I am launching a self-fundraiser to support my dance education and travel abroad. Your support would be invaluable as I strive to broaden my cultural horizons, and take enriching steps towards my journey as a Dance Movement therapist and continue to give back to my communities through art and dance. Thank you for considering helping me on this journey!
I am excited to announce my upcoming travels to Dakar, Senegal, in December 2025 with the Bakalama Dance Company, where I will delve into traditional Senegalese dance and culture under the guidance of my community dance teacher, Idy Ciss. To make this experience possible, I aim to raise $1555 by November 12th for flight expenses, with the remaining costs self-funded or covered by the host. If you are interested in collaborating through work, creative direction, or performances, please reach out—I would love to work together!
This two-week trip to Senegal in 2025 is profoundly connected to the concept of Sankofa, a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol signifying "go back and get it." Returning to the land of my ancestors isn't just a journey; it's a powerful reminder of the importance of reflection, gratitude and intention. This voyage resonates with the Black American history of reconnecting with roots of African diaspora, reinforcing the idea that our future is intertwined with knowing our past. By embracing the Sankofa philosophy through our skillsets we reclaim our identity indigenous culture, learn from the wisdom of our elders.
This Senegalese tour and dance intensive is not merely about travel; it's a deep and transformative exploration of identity and belonging that everyone should embrace in their own experience. If you are interested in collaborating through work, creative direction, or performances, please reach out—I would love to work together!
Thank you Bakalama Dance Company for this incredible opportunity. Thank you to my family and community for your continuous support, help and resources!
