Hi, my name is Kristen and I would like to first and foremost thank you for taking time out of your day to take interest in helping the Carilion Children's Hospital in Roanoke, VA.
In October, my youngest son was in Roanoke Memorial for 8 days. On our journey, we were in the PICU and then in the Pediatric Unit. During this time, it was our most difficult days we have ever faced in life. The staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital saved my sons life. There are no words or actions that can ever express my gratitude towards them. If you’re like me, you might be sitting there thinking this is a nice gesture but it doesn’t really hit “home” for you. Trust me, before the morning of October 1st, it didn’t for me either. But our lives quickly took a turn that morning, which led us down an unforgettable path. During those days, I clearly remember the first day I got to walk to our window and look outside. I had no idea where we were in the hospital. I have never felt so secluded from the world. When I looked out of the glass, I saw the side of Mill Mountain. The feeling of seeing something “familiar” outside of those walls hit me so hard. In the picture I posted, I placed the “Happy Holidays” sticker on the part of Mill Mountain that I was looking at. I want to know that every child in RMH looking out of their window on Christmas has a gift. Not only the gift of life but something to help make their life more enjoyable during some of the darkest days.
So, you’re probably wondering how my son is doing moving forward. Things have been up and down but we are thankful for *today* and each moment we share together, as a family. He has the best big brother to hold his hand on this journey. This is uneven terrain but I know I am his peace, even when everything feels like chaos.
On December 4th from 12 until 4 PM, I will be taking all of the gifts to Carilion. This gives them an adequate amount of time to quarantine before Christmas. I'm asking for donations to purchase these gifts for the children. If you would like to physically buy the gifts, that is wonderful too. It is imperative that all donations be brand new, and they must not contain anything edible, made with latex, or contain a religious message. I am attaching a wish list on my post. I will have a live drawing on December 6th and two winners will win a prize. You must donate to be entered into the drawing. I am personally purchasing a gift for each pediatric room. Please join me!
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to reach out, if you have questions. Now let's get busy working on these gifts to put a smile on each child's face.
