Sweet Selkie needs help again ...
HER STORY:
For those of you who are not familiar with her story, I adopted Selkie in May of 2025 (at 7 months old) shortly after the devastating loss of my beloved Rune (13.5 years old) in April of 2025.
She immediately became very ill with life-threatening pneumonia and almost did not make it. It took eight weeks of intensive care and roughly 8K to save her life.
In the process of getting well, we discovered that she is FELV+ (Feline Leukemia Virus Positive) and I knew that this could mean further health issues down the road for her, which is where we are now. She's still just a baby at 16 months old and has already been through so much.
WHERE WE ARE NOW:
Selkie wasn't eating, was losing weight, and was yowling and hissing at her food. I knew something was wrong so I took her into the vet. She was diagnosed with Stomatitis - a condition that FELV+ kitties are unfortunately prone to. She may also be suffering from painful FORLs which can only be diagnosed via Dental x-rays at the time of procedure, since she needs to be sedated.
I have taken her both to her regular doctor and to another practice to compare opinions and both doctors agree that the best way to prevent her from getting this painful condition again is to remove all of her teeth from the canines and incisors back.
This may seem extreme, but it is the only way to be sure that she has her best chance of staying healthy. Otherwise, she will have to go in for regular sedations and cleanings multiple times per year and if she has any of the FORLs, those teeth must come out before they become painful and problematic.
Because of her autoimmune condition, sedating her multiple times per year for expensive cleanings and xrays and possibly more extractions would be detrimental to her health and well-being, but also more costly in the long run.
She is currently on prednisone to help with the inflammation and gabapentin to help her manage the pain as needed. She's eating again, but the meds are a bandaid and she needs the surgery as soon as possible. She is currently schedule to have the procedure done on Thursday, March 5th in hopes that I can raise the money by then.
THE ASK:
$1800 is the result of calling several clinics and non-profits/low income clinics to find the most economical option. It may be only $1500 where I am taking her, but she may need additional follow ups, medications, and bloodwork, so the extra $300 would be to cover that.
