Lek Lek was born on 24 January 2020, in the remote Om Koi district of Northern Thailand. Her mother, Moh Loh, had spent her life working in logging and later giving rides to tourists in the trekking industry. Baby Lek Lek, too, seemed destined for a difficult life, trapped in a cycle of abuse and forced labour.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Save Elephant Foundation extended support to many elephants in the Om Koi area. During this time, we learned of the owner’s plans to sell Moh Loh and Lek Lek back into the entertainment industry and quickly made arrangements for their rescue.
On 12 March 2023, Lek Lek and her mother, Moh Loh, began their long journey to the sanctuary. They have since embraced their life of freedom — exploring the park, playing in the river, taking mud baths, and just being elephants.
Over time, they developed a special connection with Grandma Jokia, an elderly blind elephant who has taken on the role of Lek Lek’s devoted nanny. Her gentle care and unwavering devotion give Lek Lek the security and confidence to play and live life to the fullest. Their family has since expanded to include Sai Fon, Apple, and Sri Sook, forming a deeply bonded herd.
Today, Lek Lek enjoys a carefree, happy life and is growing into a friendly, sweet-natured, and self-assured young elephant, thanks to the loving presence of her herd and the nurturing environment of the sanctuary.
