March 23, 2024 was supposed to be a day filled with joy and enthusiasm, as young athletes gathered at Campbell Middle School for a U10 soccer match. Instead, it turned into a distressing event that highlighted a critical issue in youth sports: a lack of protection for referees and officials.Keith Woods, a dedicated referee and community servant, found himself in an unthinkable position during that match when a parent, filled with aggression, began hurling abusive language towards him. Despite Keith’s calm attempts to de-escalate and his repeated warnings, the parent pursued him relentlessly, resulting in a confrontational situation where Keith was forced to defend himself. Tragically, the absence of security and intervention led to Keith's arrest on the field, tarnishing a moment that should have been about sportsmanship and learning. The aggressor faced no consequences, leaving Keith to bear the weight of a justice system that has yet to recognize the full story. What's worse? It was his birthday!
As a young Black man committed to youth sports and community values, Keith’s life has been upended. He's lost his job, his source of income, and now faces criminal charges for an act of self-defense. But Keith’s fight is more than personal—it’s a stand for all referees experiencing similar challenges in youth sports. Your donations will not only support him while he is no longer able to serve as a referee, but also our combined effort to demand safer, more accountable environments in youth sports, where aggression is not tolerated and everyone feels protected. Every contribution counts. Your donation helps Keith fight for justice, ensuring a safer, more respectful sporting world for our children and those who guide them. Please donate and share this narrative to rally for fairness, safety, and the values we want youth sports to instill in our children.Thank you for your support and commitment to making a difference. If you have a child in youth sports and are concerned about the future of this increasingly aggressive environment, SHARE HIS STORY!
"...We're losing the art of the spirt,
letting only the flesh win.
Judging success and whether we're near it,
by how much the flesh gets.
Losing our ultimate purpose to judgements,
based solely on surface.
Judge our right to be happy,
by just how much we can purchase.
That type of life isn't worth it.
The gifts that life provides go deeper than that.
The gifts of laughter and love,
the beauty of giving back...."
