Help Me Continue the Fight Through Adaptive Sports
My name is Johnny Nunnes. I’m an active duty member of the United States Air Force and a participant in the Wounded Warrior Program. Like many service members, my journey has included injuries and challenges that forced me to redefine what strength, resilience, and recovery look like.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend and compete in the Air Force and Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Games Trials. That experience was nothing short of life-changing. Being surrounded by fellow warriors, each pushing through their own injuries, pain, and personal battles, was one of the most powerful environments I have ever been a part of. It reminded me that recovery is not something we do alone. It is built through community, perseverance, and continuing to challenge ourselves in new ways.
One of the sports that has become incredibly meaningful to me is wheelchair basketball. Adaptive sports like this give injured service members a way to rebuild strength, confidence, and purpose while continuing to compete and push our limits.
The challenge is that the equipment required to safely compete is highly specialized. A proper basketball wheelchair is very different from a standard wheelchair. It’s designed specifically for speed, stability, and agility on the court, but these chairs are also extremely expensive, often costing several thousand dollars.
I’m raising funds to help purchase a used basketball wheelchair so I can continue training. New ones range from $4- $15K, but I'm ok with a used one. Biggest desire is with competing, and growing within the adaptive sports community. My goal is not just personal recovery. I want to continue representing the warrior community and help encourage other wounded service members who may be struggling to step forward and try adaptive sports themselves.
Programs like the Wounded Warrior Games remind us that injuries do not define our limits, they simply change the way we overcome them.
