Eighteen years ago, I met a student who changed my heart forever. His name is Eddie, and even back then—when he was a seventh grader in Texas—he showed a depth of kindness and determination far beyond his years. Despite growing up with immense challenges, including a learning disability and a painful childhood, Eddie never stopped trying.

His father has always been his only caretaker, doing his best to support Eddie as he faced the world with quiet courage. Eddie worked hard through high school in Round Rock, Texas, but was denied his diploma—not because he didn’t try, but because he couldn’t pass the state math exam. Years later, Texas changed the law (SB 149), allowing students like Eddie to graduate, but by then he didn’t know how to apply.

Now, Eddie is 31 and facing the hardest chapter of his life. He’s been diagnosed with diabetes, struggles with chronic pain and limited mobility, and has lost job after job simply because his body can’t keep up with physical work. He’s living with his father again, unable to pay rent, and unable to qualify for state aid because Texas requires him to work—even though his health prevents it.

Still, Eddie refuses to give up.
He tells me every week, “I don’t want charity. I just want a chance.”

Eddie and I meet on Zoom for 8 hours a week as we work with Round Rock ISD to help him finally earn his high school diploma—a diploma that will open the door to his dream of attending Austin Community College and training to become an X-ray technician.

Eddie’s dream isn’t just about getting a job—it’s about giving back. He wants to help others, support his aging father, and contribute to his community. What he needs right now are the tools and resources to make that possible:

  • A pressure-relieving mattress to reduce pain and allow him to rest
  • A CPAP machine and replacement parts for his sleep apnea
  • Medication not covered by his insurance
  • Support for tuition and testing fees so he can earn his diploma and start college

Your donation isn’t just a handout—it’s a hand up for someone who’s been fighting for his future for years. Eddie has the heart, the drive, and the humility to rebuild his life. With your help, he can take the next step toward independence, health, and meaningful work.

Please help Eddie take back his future—one class, one step, one dream at a time.

❤️ Donate today to give Eddie his second chance at life and learning.
