Sometimes, even landmark status isn't enough to protect our neighborhoods' most historic buildings.
The latest battleground: The former PS 64 on East 9th Street in Manhattan.
The 100-year-old building overlooking Tompkins Square Park was abandoned in the 1970s until a neighborhood group, Charas, transformed it into a hub for artists and activists. In 1998, the city sold PS 64 to a developer. Three years later, Charas was kicked to the curb.
Though the building was granted landmark status in 2006, the developer has continued with plans to turn it into a "fake dorm" - working around the deed restriction that states that the building must serve as a community facility.
We need to let the city know that we want this historic building to once again serve as a place where members of our community can come together. Please donate $1, $2 or $3 and share this story!
