One last adventure: Butterfly migration in Michoacán, Mexico
Sue Wade Vaughan
March 26, 1941 - March 10, 2023

Do you know the story of the annual migration of Monarch Butterflies?
Sue did, and it fascinated her.
Sue Vaughan was an gifted gardener, educator, artist, philanthropist, advocate, activist, world traveler and cultural aficionado. She particularly loved science, and graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in Biology in 1962.
Sue taught many of the kids in our neighborhood about science right in our backyard, and butterflies were a favorite. Each spring, we watched the tiny eggs on a parsley plant become caterpillars, then stunning swallowtail butterflies. We'd bring toads and crawdads home, muddy from the creek and curious about nature, and she encouraged exploration & learning throughout our lives.
Later in life, Sue would plant milkweed in that same backyard to support the dwindling Monarch butterfly population. She was enthralled by the annual migration of the 'Super Generation' which is the fourth generation of Monarch that somehow lives 3x longer than the 3 previous generations, and then finds its way from Canada to Mexico each year to start the lifecycle over again.
To honor her love of travel and butterflies, we wish to give her that trip to a Mexican butterfly preserve & complete her bucket list.
Her final journey will be to El Rosario Butterfly Preserve in Mexico, where her remains will be scattered during the annual Monarch migration next February.
If Sue touched your life, please consider donating to help fund this trip. It will be a meaningful journey for a very special mother, sister, cousin and friend.
We will travel to Michoacán, Mexico 2024 to experience one of nature's most mysterious miracles while we honor Sue's legacy of boundless curiosity, her love of people and her passion for the natural world. Thank you for supporting the cause. We invite you to share your stories about Sue on her obituary page at https://everloved.com/life-of/sue-vaughan/
