On June 18, my brother, Chance Hampton, made the courageous decision to become sober and begin his journey away from alcohol. Unfortunately, this decision led to severe and unforeseen health complications.
On June 19, he was rushed to the emergency room in Williston, North Dakota, after experiencing serious symptoms which they thought was related to alcohol withdrawal. He was admitted to the ICU, and over the next five days underwent numerous tests, including chest X-rays, CT scans, blood work, and cardiac evaluations.
The results revealed that Chance was facing an extremely difficult road to recovery. On June 24, he was transferred to Minot, North Dakota, for a higher level of care in ICU.
Doctors diagnosed him with:
A blood infection that had originated from a severely infected tooth.
Severe pneumonia A serious heart infection that caused vegetation to form on one of his heart valves, resulting in significant leakage
Over the past two weeks in Minot, the medical team has worked tirelessly to keep him stable through intravenous antibiotics, blood pressure medications, treatments for fluid retention, and respiratory therapy. On July 4 Chance was moved out of ICU.
On July 6, doctors performed a specialized scope procedure to gain a clearer understanding of the damage to his heart. They determined that his aortic valve would need to be replaced, and another valve is also leaking. At this time, the extent of repair needed for the second valve remains uncertain.
Throughout this entire ordeal, our parents have remained by Chance's side every day and will continue to do so throughout his recovery. At this time, there is no clear timeline for when he will be released from the hospital.
