There is something that has been weighing heavily on my heart, and after much thought, I’ve decided to ask for help.
I came home to find a tiny kitten abandoned in a box on my doorstep. He has an upper respiratory infection and now needs immediate veterinary care before he can safely be around my own animals.
While my dream is to one day open an animal sanctuary and rescue, that dream is still in the making. Right now, I am simply one person doing everything I can with the resources I have. As much as my heart wants to save every animal, it is not safe or fair for people to leave animals at my home. It puts my own animals at risk, especially when contagious illnesses are involved.
Over the years, we’ve opened our home to animals that had nowhere else to go. Today, we care for 10 rescued dogs, 19 rescued cats, a rescued goat, and rescued raccoons—each one with their own story, their own trauma, and their own second chance.
Rescue doesn’t end when an animal is brought home. In many ways, that’s where the real work begins.
Some of our rescues require lifelong medications. We care for a dog with seizures, cats and dogs with chronic allergies who require prescription diets and medications, and a hypothyroid rescue we pulled from the shelter’s euthanasia list who now gets to experience the life every dog deserves.
We have also taken on some incredibly challenging medical cases. One of our rescued cats came to us with both back legs broken, and we made the decision to move forward with surgery to give them a chance at a pain-free life. We also had a Great Dane and Cane Corso mix abandoned at our home. Despite our efforts, we were never able to find him another home, and he ultimately became part of our family. Caring for such a large dog comes with significant expenses, especially when it comes to feeding him, but he is safe, loved, and finally home.
This past year has also brought heartbreaking medical challenges within our own family. We recently had to amputate one of our beloved dogs’ leg after a diagnosis of bone cancer. We also said goodbye to two of our senior pets after they lost their own battles with cancer. While we would make those decisions again in a heartbeat to give them every chance possible, the veterinary expenses have been overwhelming, and we’re still working to catch up.
Every animal in our home has a warm bed, full belly, fresh water, medical care when they need it, and, most importantly, love. They don’t know they were abandoned, neglected, or unwanted anymore. They only know they are safe.
But the reality is that rescue comes with an enormous financial responsibility. Food, prescription diets, medications, preventatives, routine care, emergencies, surgeries, diagnostics, and specialist visits add up quickly.
So today, I’m humbly asking for your help.
