This is 10 year old Aurora! The daughter of Jay and Kate Beachy, My fiance's god daughter and my flower girl! 2021 didn’t ease up on any of us, that's for sure, but it didn’t spare this sweet girl either. In march she sustained injury while jumping on a trampoline. She had complained of back pain, her parents took her for an X-Ray and the results showed nothing. The pain worsened. Her doctor called for an MRI in May. They saw she had a fracture in her spine that hadn’t showed on the X-Ray. In early June the 65% wedge compression of her T7 vertebrae had deteriorated since the last MRI. The vertebrae were unstable and shifting towards her spine. Now there was a concern of why it was deteriorating.
She was admitted to the hospital several times throughout June for blood work, bone biopsies and overall fears of further deterioration and even paralysis. By the end of the month she had spinal fusion surgery with metal pin implants to stabilize her spine. She’s been in brace 23 hours a day since May and will need to continue to wear it until her back is healed.
In mid July her parents received results from the Infectious Disease Dept. For those of you who don’t know Aurora has Alopecia. Autoimmune diseases tend to compound. The current diagnosis responsible for the deterioration of her vertebrae is Chronic Non-Bacterial Osteomyelitis. It can cause her overactive immune system to attack bones at random.
This is the beginning of a new journey for Aurora as her doctors decide the best course of treatment and monitoring for her. Through all of this uncertainty she has continued to stay in good spirits, and for that we can all admire her. A close friend of the family, James Yates, had a great idea to plan a trip to Disney for Aurora as a Christmas surprise. Despite financial times being tough for the majority of us right now, he generously paid for their flights and hotel stay to get them there!
Aurora has dreamed of going to Disney for so long and has been saving change, asking every year if it was enough to go since she was able to do so. My goal is to get them $3,000 to pay for their park tickets, resort taxes, food and a little bit of spending money to insure Aurora gets to memorialize this trip!
