In May, life changed dramatically for Leslie and her family. After experiencing a major seizure, she was rushed to the hospital where doctors discovered she has glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive and devastating form of brain cancer. Anyone who knows Leslie knows she is loving, smart, strong, funny, resilient, and incredibly brave. Even in the face of this devastating diagnosis, she continues to meet each day with determination and grumpy optimism.
Leslie underwent surgery to remove the tumors, but microscopic cancer cells remain and recurrence is likely. In mid-July, Leslie will begin the standard treatment of six weeks of daily radiation and chemotherapy, followed by additional chemotherapy and surgeries. Even with this treatment, her prognosis is grim — her doctor estimates her life expectancy is 12 to 15 months.
While her medical team is providing the best care available in the United States, her family is committed to giving her the best chance at more time and a better quality of life. Leslie and her family hope to pursue treatment in Germany, where a promising medical trial offers hope to patients facing this devastating disease. The cost of this specialized treatment, international travel, lodging, and related medical expenses is approximately $150,000, far beyond what the family can manage alone.

To know Leslie is to know someone whose life has been about caring for others. She is a devoted single mother to her 18-year-old son, Luis, who is preparing to begin college this fall. She is happiest surrounded by her family and friends, listening to music, reading, traveling to the Frio River for family reunions, and engaging in thoughtful conversations about the world. For the past 12 years, she has volunteered at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital, giving her time to encourage and support patients on their own journeys. She has also opened her heart and home to more than 50 foster dogs, helping each one find the loving family they deserved, even keeping a couple of them! When her sister got pregnant with triplets, Leslie moved in to help care for her and spent another 2 ½ years helping care for her niece and nephews once they were born. She is the kind of person who quietly (or loudly) shows up whenever someone needs her. Giving has always come naturally to Leslie. Asking for help never has.
