UPDATED January 25, 2025.....Although my classes were initially dropped due to financial challenges, I got them reinstated. But I still need help to cover the remaining costs for this semester. Despite applying for work-study and receiving other scholarships, I’m still short. If you can help, I’m not asking you to stretch your own budget—just whatever little extra you may have. It would truly mean the world to me to finish this semester without the constant worry of finances. If you can’t contribute, would you consider sharing my story with family or friends? Any support helps, and I’m so grateful for your kindness. Thank you for helping me stay focused on my education at Spelman.
My name is Janese and I am a freshman at Spelman College, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In addition to my academic endeavors, I am also a cross-town Air Force ROTC student at Georgia Tech University. I’ve worked hard to balance my studies, my extracurricular activities, and my commitment to both schools and I’ve poured my heart into everything I do. I’m involved in several on-campus activities such as the Spelman Jaguarettes and the Spelpreneur Cohort, which have shaped my college experience and helped me grow as a student, leader, and individual.
When I first found out that I had qualified for the Bonner Scholarship, I felt a wave of excitement and relief. It felt like a lifeline—something that would make a huge difference in my ability to continue my education at Spelman. This scholarship was my ticket to pursuing my dreams at Spelman College, a place where I’ve truly felt at home and supported. Not only would I be able to continue my education at my dream school, but I would also be able to do so without the constant stress of financial burdens, all while continuing to serve and help others in my community. But just as quickly as that hope was ignited, I found myself waitlisted.
After the holidays, I learned that I didn’t receive the scholarship I had worked so hard to obtain. That news was a heavy blow. Now, with such short notice, I am facing a challenging situation that puts everything in jeopardy.
With the semester looming, I find myself in an incredibly stressful situation. I’ve been told that my classes will be dropped if I can’t come up with at least $7,000 by January 24th. I’ve worked so hard to get here, and the thought of not being able to continue my education at Spelman is overwhelming. I have received a few scholarships, including the renewable NAACP Creative Sole Scholarship, for which I am incredibly grateful, but these are still not enough to cover my expenses.
This is where I’m asking for help. I’m reaching out with a heavy heart, knowing that anything could make a difference. If there’s any way you could contribute—whether it’s a small donation or spreading the word to friends or family—it would mean the world to me. Every bit counts and will help me get closer to the amount I need to stay at Spelman and continue my academic journey.
I am passionate about my studies, especially in political science and entrepreneurship, and I believe deeply in the mission of Spelman College. The community here has already given me so much, and I am determined to keep pushing forward with everything I have. This is more than just a college experience for me—it’s an opportunity to build a future that will allow me to give back and make a difference.
I appreciate your time in reading this, and I hope you’ll consider offering any support that you can. Thank you for helping me keep my schedule intact, and for giving me the chance to continue this journey that means so much to me.
With gratitude and hope,
Janese Cosby
