In November 2023, a new chapter in our family story began as I became the legal guardian to Kya, a vibrant young girl who has been a part of my life ever since her mother came into my care years ago. As her "Mimi,", welcoming her full-time into our home felt like a natural step, and now, I am determined to make it official by adopting her.

Though Kya is kin by love and bond, the court does not recognize me as a relative since we share no DNA. This unique situation leaves me shouldering the full financial burden of the adoption process without the typical support from DCS, as they closed their involvement in November of 2023 when I became the court appointed legal guardian.

The journey involves hiring an attorney, covering guardian ad litem costs, and managing mediation and state fees, with a home study and remaining expenses totaling $2,000. As a single mom of adopted twin boys with special needs, managing the day-to-day expenses leaves little room for these additional legal costs.
