Allesandra Beavers is a 10 year old child with multiple disabilities. She was born with a disease called sodium channel myotonia which is treated with medication. At age 3, she was diagnosed with autism and soon after that a tumor on her kidneys was discovered called Wilms tumor, which is cancer of the kidney. The tumor ruptured, causing her to lose her kidney. She had three surgeries, and 15 months of chemotherapy and currently is in remission.
At age 7 Alle began a battle with epilepsy. She has been in and out of the hospital with many seizures over the past three years. In January 2024 she was give the diagnosis of Lennoxgastaut Syndrome which includes uncontrolled seizures. A new medication used to treat that condition called Epodiolex was prescribed for Alle. She responded very well, seizure free for 6 months.
On August 11th Alle had been recovering from a viral infection and a fever spiked which ultimately led to a series of repetitive seizures. EMT was called to transport her to the hospital. When they were taking her from our home she had a cardiac arrest outside our house. They were able to establish her vitals, safe enough to transport her. In route to the hospital she had a second cardiac arrest. She was deprived of oxygen for approximately 40 minutes. Her chance for survival was very grim. Once again Alle is beating all the expectations of the doctors and recovering from this tragic incident. She has been in the hospital for three weeks and in a couple weeks will be discharged for a rehab program at her home.
In consultation with her doctors, social workers, therapist’s and educational staff we have all agreed that a service companion dog could be life-saving for Alle. The dog would benefit the care of her physical disabilities, mental health and safety.
