Nettuno, Italy, holds a unique place in the shared history of the United States and Europe, as it is a poignant symbol of liberty and cultural exchange. During World War II, American troops landed in Nettuno and Anzio as part of the Allied effort to liberate Italy, leaving an indelible mark on the town and its people. This historic connection extended beyond wartime, as U.S. soldiers introduced baseball to the region, planting the seeds for what would become a cherished Italian tradition. Nettuno is now affectionately known as the "City of Baseball" in Italy, a title that reflects its rich cultural bond with America.
Today, Nettuno is home to landmarks that honor this enduring legacy. The city boasts the largest baseball stadium in Italy and the nation’s first baseball team, evidence of how deeply this American pastime has taken root. Nearby, the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by nearly 11,000 U.S. service members. Adding to this cultural bridge, Nettuno recently forged a Sister City relationship with Cooperstown, New York, the iconic baseball town and home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. This partnership further strengthens the historical and cultural ties between the two nations, celebrating their shared heritage and mutual passion for the sport.
To further honor this bond, we are developing a Pop-Up Museum: ” From the Landing to the Legacy...Nettuno, City of Baseball”. This dynamic exhibit will showcase the origins of baseball in Italy, the sport’s role in fostering cross-cultural understanding, and its continued impact on Italian-American relations. Featuring photographic displays and historical artifacts, this museum will invite visitors to explore the transformative power of sports and history in uniting nations and communities. This will preserve the shared heritage of Nettuno and the United States and also inspire future generations to cherish and celebrate these enduring ties.
