Wildfire is becoming an ever present concern and threat in our lives. Growing up in Southern California it's always been an annual concern but not to the extent that it is now. There needs to be a global reconstruction in terms of how we think about and approach land and fire management but that's a lecture for another day. As of today, a good friend of mine has peer pressured me into running a half marathon.... NEXT WEEK (August 27th). I haven't been training so this is a terrible idea but I'm doing it anyway. I figure I might as well capitalize on the moment as best I can in support of those who are suffering so greatly at this time. Sonoma County and southern California residents know all too well the tragedy associated with wildfire and what it is to lose everything to fire. The situation in Maui is made more complex by the limited resources and services available on the island. I hope that you will help me in fundraising support for those affected in Maui by pledging either a donation based on my mileage (a half marathon is disgustingly 13.1 miles) or a flat donation of your choice. I have chosen the Maui United Way - Maui Fire Disaster Relief fund as they are at the forefront of providing DIRECT support to locals who have suffered so greatly. "All donations will help Maui United Way bring relief and recovery resources to fire survivors and the nonprofits who support them. The Maui Relief Fund will go directly to efforts supporting victims of the fires to provide immediate financial assistance through grants to nonprofits at the forefront of relief efforts, as well as directly to households that have been deeply affected."
After witnessing so many families be swindled and misdirected during fire relief here in Sonoma County I really value a decent organization that will put funds and support directly into the hands of those most affected. And I believe that the Maui Relief Fund will do just that.
