Hi friends,

My name is Courtney & the reason for this fundraiser is to help my brother, Brion (age 43), afford & manage the post-surgical and rehabilitation treatments, therapies, in-home care,  medical costs & equipment associated with his fight against brain cancer and recovery from ischemic stroke, very little of which is covered by insurance and most of which will soon become the responsibility of Brion and our family.

About my brother, Brion:

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always looked up to my brother; both out of admiration for his fearlessness to try absolutely anything once but also for his uncanny ability to somehow always come out on top through any difficult situation he’s faced; and not just on top but even better than before. While I opted to walk the more straight and narrow path throughout much of my life (often joking that he taught me what not to do for fear of getting in trouble with my parents), he remained solid and steadfast in his approach to life—fearlessly challenging the status quo and taking leaps upon leaps of faith that have led him down tremendous paths of achievement.

My brother is…

  • The first person I go to if I ever need a good laugh, and not just a little laugh but the best kind of laugh—genuine, full-bodied, stomach hurts, face contorts, tears streaming down your face, spit out your drink, big raucous kind of laugh. The kind that oftentimes only the people who know you best can muster out of you.
  • An avid reader who overcame a reading disorder as a child and can now most often be found reading 1 of maybe 7 books at the same time on anything from Greek Mythology & World Religion to Ancient History and the I Ching.
  • A curious sort and a tinkerer of technology. He received his much deserved and long sought after BS degree in electrical engineering from USF a few months prior to his diagnosis—meaning he was able to achieve a degree in one of the toughest fields of study all while (very likely!) battling brain cancer.
  • A self-taught classical pianist with an unwavering passion for music and dance. Whether he’s playing the likes of Bach & Beethoven or dancing the night away to Soul Train or Salsa, music is his first love and greatest source of freedom and self-expression.
  • A student of life and seeker of experiences over material things. From his time serving in the US Navy and defending our freedom during 9/11 attacks, to broadening his horizons by living in Italy for 6 years and learning to cook and speak Italian, then to his recent trek to Nepal for spiritual enlightenment and receiving a 200hr yoga teacher training certificate (while battling brain cancer!), throughout his entire life Brion has always been and has remained fearless.

Even now, as he faces the absolute greatest challenge of his life, he has remained ever optimistic and, remarkably, grateful for this experience—viewing this chapter of his life as a gift and part of his deep inner journey of transformation (i.e. The Hero’s Journey).

It is this mentality, positivity, and again uncanny ability to prevail that gives us the hope and strength that he’ll be able to come out on top, just like all the other times he has before.

Brion’s Cancer Journey:

In August of 2022 Brion, age 43, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (brain cancer) and underwent brain surgery + chemo and radiation. Following this, he dedicated the past year to the intensive study and evaluation of (his) mind, body and spirit. Through daily meditation, adoption of the keto diet, regular fasting (for upwards of 5 days!), sound healing, and yoga, he transformed into the healthiest version of himself and did everything he could to give his body the best chance of beating the cancer.

Recently though, Brion started experiencing familiar symptoms of when the cancer first showed up and surgery was again recommended as his best option for survival. So on August 17th, 2023 Brion underwent brain surgery again and while successful, he unfortunately experienced an “ischemic event” during surgery which left him without feeling or mobility on the left side of his body.

Brion is now facing a tremendous uphill battle of not only fighting cancer but overcoming the effects of his stroke as well.

On September 1, 2023 he was admitted into in-patient acute rehab where he is receiving daily OT, PT & Speech Therapy, 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Today, marks his 12th day in rehab and a couple days ago we were notified that our insurance will only approve 16 days of rehab total.

This is not nearly enough time for Brion to recover—not even in the slightest. We now have just 5 days to figure out how we will afford and provide the same level of care he needs to fully recover from his stroke and continue to fight the cancer.

A Brief Insurance Rant:

In the past, insurance used to cover upwards of 3 months of rehab but they adjusted this by taking average lengths of stays for all patients (not considering outlier situations) and cut their coverage to a matter of weeks, on average, for all patients.

To add to this, while insurance may eventually cover the cost of equipment, patients don’t receive the equipment they need immediately upon discharge. It can take weeks to months to get the equipment needed which leaves families scrambling to find and afford the proper equipment to not only care for their loved one but to be able to care for them safely and at home.

This mentality puts so much strain on the patient and family and leaves only 2 options- home or nursing home. Brion going into a nursing home is absolutely not an option. And no family should have to face these as the only options.

Having never gone through anything like this in my life, I am astounded at how much is put on families to ensure the best care for their loved ones in situations such as these. It’s incredibly disheartening. More needs to be done to support patients and their families.

How you can help:

  • Donate $ for Brion’s care- While Brion does have insurance, medicaid and receives disability, it is unfortunately not nearly enough. Your donations will go directly to Brion & help cover his costs for treatments, therapies, rehab, in-home care + the medical costs & equipment associated with his fight against brain cancer and recovery from the stroke.
  • Share Your Ideas & Research- We are a small fish in a very big pond of ideas, experiences and research that exists and navigating this is incredibly time-consuming & complex. If you know of a program, treatment, technology etc. that looks promising for Brion’s condition we’d love to speak to you. Please message me here.
  • Push Administration To Act Faster- Vice President Biden launched the Cancer Moonshot in 2016 and the current Biden administration has renewed this effort—focusing on reducing cancer death and improving the experience of people affected by cancer, but so much more needs to be done—and now. To provide Brion with the ‘round the clock support and advocacy he requires takes a very large & strong village.
    • We have a team of about 6 family members and friends devoting time everyday to Brion’s care plus a handful of folks who’ve helped us in small ways throughout this entire process. Additionally, as his advocate, it's made it impossible for me to continue working and I’ve had to temporarily move back to FL from my home in San Francisco.
    • Even with all of this, it’s still not enough. This  experience has been tremendously difficult for Brion and my family. And to know that untold numbers of people potentially face these types of challenges alone is unimaginable. More needs to be done to raise awareness of how inadequate most medical insurance coverage actually is when it comes to long term rehabilitation & care.
  • State & Share Brion’s Affirmation- We as a family strongly believe in the power of words and positive affirmations so we are asking everyone to please state the following words for Brion and ask your friends & community to as well:
    • “Brion is walking & has fully recovered from his stroke, Brion is healed from cancer and Brion is living a healthy & full life.”

As for the future, Brion dreams of one day opening a holistic health center where he aims to share everything he’s learned throughout this experience and provide a place of peace, support, care and natural healing for all those facing diseases or similar situations.

Your contributions will not only help to ensure he can reach this goal, but will aid in helping others heal in the future. Thank you for your support in making his dream come true.

I will post updates here on how your contributions have helped Brion. Please also follow Brion's journey on Instagram @helpbrionfightbraincancer.

Thank you all for your love and support.

Courtney

Hello all,

I'm writing to let you know that on Sunday, December 3rd, my beautiful, big brother left us for the stars. His passing was peaceful and he was surrounded in love.

I miss him so much but I know he's in a better place now, smiling that big ole grin of his and making everyone around him laugh and feel loved.

While tremendously difficult, I cherish every moment we've had together these past 6 months. Taking care of him and being a witness to his unwavering strength and courage throughout this entire journey has been my honor and I've never felt greater purpose in my life.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you all for fighting this fight with us. What we were able to accomplish together ensured that my brother was given the best possible chance at overcoming this horrible circumstance, and while it is not what we wanted, there's so much beauty in how we all came together for Brion.

Every donation, every message, every call, every text, every prayer and every thought of love for Brion and our family mattered.

I wish I could hug and thank each of you in person but please know that we feel so loved by all of you and are endlessly grateful for your support.

We're hosting a celebration of life for him this Saturday at 1pm at his home in Dunedin. Anyone who loves Brion is welcome to attend. Please text me if you'd like more details 813-393-0065.

Love to you all,

Hello everyone,

It's been a very difficult time for Brion and my family and I've really struggled to find the words or courage to share this, but at this point I feel you all should know that Brion isn't doing well...

If you recall, in a recent post I had mentioned that we had an upcoming MRI that was going to be a big moment for us in understanding the effectiveness of the surgery, immunotherapy, HBOT and other treatments he's undergone to combat the cancer.

During his recent hospital stay, Brion had this MRI and on November 3rd, we found out that the cancer has spread into his spinal fluid which has allowed it to grow into the other side of his brain. And there's nothing more the doctors can do for Brion.

The doctors were concerned about this a month ago when he had the spinal taps and we were so hopeful it wasn't the case, but our worst fears were confirmed.

We really wrestled with whether or not to share this information with Brion. There are many reasons not to tell someone this, but knowing Brion and witnessing how he's faced this entire journey and because of his spiritual beliefs, we knew he'd want to know.

So, we waited until he was home because we didn't want him to receive this information while he was in the hospital and on November 5th, my mom and I told him. I honestly can't recall everything I said...When you're in moments like these you want every word to be perfect but all I can remember now that I able to say through my tears was I love you over and over again. We held him and cried with him for hours.

Brion received this information with such strength and grace as he's done this entire time. He at that point could say very little as it's becoming tougher for him to speak but what he could say was, "It's okay...I'm glad you told me...and I love you".

It's been 11 days of him knowing this and and my heart hurts for him everyday. I hate that he has to live with this knowledge. And because he's almost non-verbal and can't write or journal (which has always been his way to work through things) he has to sit in his thoughts all day.

I really struggle to know what to say these days. Everything seems so futile. But, if I reflect on how he's approached his diagnosis since day 1, his belief is that speaking about the disease would only give it power. So we are trying to continue on that path for him. To not give the disease or his passing any power. But it's very, very difficult.

We are a family that has always believed and trusted that everything happens for a reason, that our spirits live on and that we will be reunited again one day. And while it's difficult to understand why he and our family have had to go through all this, this gives me comfort at times.

The doctors have said that he has anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months to live. He isn't in any pain and sleeps most of the time. Here and there he'll give us a smile and maybe a word or two which is generally something humorous. The fact that he can still laugh at life and make jokes is incredible and gives me greater strength in knowing that he's okay. That he'll be okay...

Thank you all so much for helping us fight this fight with Brion. We need your strength, love and prayers, now more than ever.

With deep love and gratitude,

Courtney

Hello everyone,

I apologize for the delay in providing an update since Brion's most recent hospital stay. It's been a very busy couple of weeks for us.

I wanted to quickly let you all know though that Brion is home now and is no longer experiencing any breathing issues. They confirmed he had a few blood clots (no pneumonia) so he is on blood thinners now to clear that up.

We are taking some time this week to let him rest from PT and other therapies and enjoy more time with family and friends.

Thank you for all your love and support. Please continue to keep Brion and our family in your thoughts and prayers.

Hello everyone,

Posting a quick update to let you all know that Brion was admitted into the hospital yesterday due to abnormal breathing and a high fever.

We were first told he has pneumonia of both lungs but I guess this needs to be confirmed with a different scan so it could be pneumonia or it could be blood clots in his lungs. He also has a blood clot in his left leg and increased fluid in his spine.

He's on blood thinners and his breathing has normalized. He's not in pain and is sleeping mostly. We're waiting for him to get an MRI and an additional scan of his chest to confirm what's going on.

We're all very worried and need everyone's strength, love and prayers.

I'll be posting more frequent updates on his instagram if you'd like to follow along- https://www.instagram.com/helpbrionfightbraincancer/

Thank you all for continuing to keep Brion and my family in your hearts.

Love,

Courtney

Hello friends and family,

Here to give a quick update on how Brion has been since his most recent hospital stay.

Overall it's been a mix of both good and bad days. Some days he's alert and conversational, others he's very tired and maybe just says a few words the whole day. It can be hard to tell at times if he's improving or if he's declining.

He complains very little, which is not unlike him. And most of his comments are jokes, which if you know Brion is also no surprise. It also gives us great hope that even through all this, he can laugh. We tend to be a family of a lot of laughter and that levity, I believe, has been hugely impactful to his recovery and ability to remain positive. As well as our ability to sustain this fight everyday.

Brion had his first dose of immunotherapy (Avastin) on 10/16 and he'll receive this treatment every 2 weeks. We're also hopeful to gain insurance approval for another treatment called Keytruda but there are apparently many insurance hoops to jump through before patients can be approved for this.

Cue insurance rant.

Aside from the Keytruda approval being an ordeal, we've learned through this process that patients can't even start the much needed cancer treatments or therapies they need until they are out of a hospital setting due to limitations of insurance billing.

So, since Brion suffered a stroke during surgery, it took 3 weeks to be safely discharged from the hospital. He then, as you know, was admitted into acute in-patient rehab which is also considered a hospital setting and stayed there for another 3 weeks. Which then takes us to his most recent hospital where he had to stay another 2 weeks. All of this created delays in the approval and application of his treatments.

It took a total of 61 days for Brion to start receiving his MUCH NEEDED treatment for the cancer. In all this time the only thing we've been able to fight is the effects of the stroke. Him having a stroke put his entire cancer treatment plan behind. Insurance should not control people's ability to receive treatment, equipment, therapies, NOTHING. I know I don't know everything there is to know about healthcare and I'm sure theres complexities to this I don't have insight into but I just don't understand it, not in the slightest. There should not be limits to anyone's care because of insurance. Ever. I continue to be completely disappointed and outraged by our healthcare system's inadequacies.

Things we're continuing to work towards today to afford his care:

  • Getting in front of someone at BCBS locally to see if we're missing anything w/ re: to his benefits. UPDATE: No time to work on.
  • Renewing his Medicaid to get LTC designation. UPDATE: Still a work in progress.
  • Setting up VA benefits but it could take several months to a year to get this. UPDATE: We've completed the paperwork and hope to see approval and funds come through quickly but likely still a couple months
  • Looking into AARP. UPDATE: No time to work on.
  • Considering a 2nd mortgage on his home. UPDATE: Or selling his home...
  • Researching live-in rehab facilities (in and out of state). Private pay and nothing like a nursing home. We're researching what it would take financially to get him the absolute best care and rehab, now. UPDATE: No time to work on.
  • Continuing to raise $. UPDATE: We've raised over $36k together!!!! THANK YOU!! Absolutely incredible! :)
  • Find more affordable ways for wheelchair transportation. UPDATE: We found out a couple weeks ago that Brion's Medicaid covers transport to and from doctors appts. Why this wasn't told to us months ago is very frustrating and apart from it taking me an inordinate amount of time to book every individual appointment + the hours we wait when they're late to pickup Brion, it's saving us money so I'm grateful to have found this.

How you can provide the most impact with the greatest near term needs:

  • SHARE BRION'S STORY! And reminder, when sharing, please include a personal message as this helps people connect you and others to his story more.
  • Donate $. I know everyone here has already given so much and I hate to ask more of you all. Please know that even the smallest amount 1000% helps us. Anything you're able to give we deeply, deeply appreciate.
  • Volunteer time, ideas, etc. If anyone would like to volunteer or chat about ways to help I am all ears. And with any idea you have, if you are able to run with the idea and research to the extent where family doesn't need to be involved that would be very helpful. We've been provided so many ideas but its hard to even find the time to look into them. Please reach out to me at anytime to discuss!

What's next for Brion:

Brion will continue to do HBOT and PT 5 days a week (private pay) as well as receive PT, OT and Speech therapy 1 day a week through home health.

His next appointment for immunotherapy is November 1st. He'll also get an MRI and meet with his neuro-oncologist that day to review his bloodwork and MRI. It will be a very big day for us to understand where we're at with his cancer and we'll need all the healing thoughts and prayers that day from this community.

I also wanted to note from a financing standpoint, we've decided to put all the money we've raised into paying for Brion's treatments, therapies and equipment so between myself, my mom, my uncle and Brion's best friend, Carlos, the four of us are pitching in everyday to save on caregiver costs and give him the best possible chance of overcoming all the obstacles he's facing.

I'm beyond grateful for their sacrifice and for each and every one of you supporting Brion's fight, everyday.

Thank you, thank you all!
