Meet Jax.

He's a 15-pound shih tzu with a 100-pound personality, a fearless spirit, and a talent for stealing hearts (and occasionally toilet paper). Next month, my little puppy-son turns 11 years old, and right now he needs our help.

🐾

Jax has been by my side since he was a freshly weaned puppy in 2015. He came into my life while I was still grieving the loss of my previous puppy-son, Andi, who I lost to cancer. I wasn't sure I was ready to open my heart again until I saw Jax's picture. I knew immediately that he was meant to be part of my family. Although Jax and Andi never got to meet, I still tell him all the time that Andi would have loved him and they would have made the best brothers.

🐾

For nearly 11 years, Jax has been my best friend, my little shadow, and my ride-or-die companion. He and his cat-sisters Halle and Lucy have brought me countless moments of happiness and have been some of the brightest parts of my life.

🐾

Anyone who knows Jax knows exactly what kind of little guy he is. He is everybody's best friend, but he is also feisty, fearless, and absolutely convinced he is 10 feet tall and bulletproof. He loves cuddling on the couch with his daddy while we watch TV, playing with his Frankenstein toy, carrying around his stuffed monkey, and — for reasons only he understands — impressing guests by stealing as much toilet paper as he can and running away with it.

🐾

That's Jax.

🐾

That is why seeing him like this has been so difficult.

For about a month, Jax has been limping on his back legs, especially his left one. Over the last week, it has gotten significantly worse. He is having trouble jumping onto the couch, climbing into bed (even using his stairs), getting comfortable lying down, getting back up, keeping his balance, and even stepping through the back door to go outside.

🐾

Jax has always been the kind of dog who pushes through everything. He once had a serious cut on his chest after helping me in the garden and never even let me know he was hurt. I only discovered it because I felt it while we were cuddled up together watching TV late that night. He didn't cry. He didn't complain. He was just being Jax.

Which is why seeing him slow down and not act like himself is so concerning.

🐾

His appetite has decreased, although he is still eating and still enjoys his treats. His weight seems stable, but combined with his mobility issues and the changes in his personality, I know he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

I need to get Jax examined and have X-rays done to find out what is happening and what treatment he needs. The initial costs are expected to be around $700, including his exam, imaging, and possible additional care.

🐾

I am doing everything I can, but this unexpected medical expense is more than I can manage alone right now.

🐾

If you're unable to donate, sharing Jax's story would mean just as much. Every share gives us another chance to get him the care he needs. Any help, whether through a donation or simply sharing Jax's story, would mean the world to us.

🐾

As soon as the funds are available, I will schedule his appointment immediately. Every dollar raised will go toward getting Jax the examination, answers, and care he needs to get back to being the happy, fearless little guy we all love.

🐾

Thank you for helping my best friend. ❤️🐾

Jax Update ❤️🐾

First, thank you.

🐾

To everyone who has donated, shared Jax's story, sent kind messages, or simply kept him in your thoughts and prayers—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your generosity made today's veterinary visit possible, and I can't express how grateful I am.

The news is a bit of a mixed bag, but I'm feeling cautiously optimistic.

🐾

The good news is that Jax's X-rays ruled out arthritis, which was one of my biggest concerns. Based on his exam, the veterinarian believes the issue is neurological, meaning the signals from his brain aren't fully reaching his hind legs the way they should.

🐾

The X-rays couldn't completely rule out a pinched nerve or slipped disc, but they also didn't point to anything definitive. The other possibility would require seeing a specialist and more advanced imaging. While that's something we'll keep in mind if needed, the vet explained that one of the more serious possibilities—a spinal tumor—is quite rare.

🐾

One thing that gave me hope is that the joint chews I've been giving Jax seem to provide him with some relief. The vet said that's encouraging and could be consistent with inflammation or a nerve-related issue.

🐾

For now, we're taking a conservative approach. I'm switching him to a healthier fresh-food diet, trying a new joint supplement, and keeping a close eye on how he responds over the coming days and weeks. My hope—and my prayer—is that we're dealing with something we can manage and improve without more invasive treatment.

🐾

No matter what comes next, we're going to keep fighting for this little guy.

🐾

Thank you all for helping us get this far. You didn't just help pay for a vet visit—you helped us get answers, a plan, and, most importantly, hope.

🐾

Please keep Jax in your thoughts and prayers as we take the next steps.

🐾

Love,

Michael & Jax ❤️🐾

Wonderful news! ❤️🐾

Thanks to the incredible generosity of everyone who has donated, shared, and supported Jax's fundraiser, I was able to schedule his veterinary appointment.

🐾

Jax will be seeing the vet next Thursday at 3:30 PM for his exam and X-rays so we can finally find out what's causing his pain and start getting him the care he needs. We're not at the finish line yet, but today feels like a huge step forward.

🐾

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping make this possible. Your kindness has given me something I desperately needed this week: hope.

🐾

Please keep my little guy in your thoughts as we head toward his appointment. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated.

Thank you all. ❤️🐾

Quick update on Jax ❤️🐾

First, I just want to say thank you.

🐾

Because of the incredible generosity and kindness of everyone who has donated, shared, or taken the time to read Jax’s story, we have now raised $320 toward his veterinary care.

🐾

I also have some good news: I’ve been approved for CareCredit, which means I can move forward with scheduling Jax’s appointment instead of having to wait until the full amount is raised.

🐾

My little guy is going to get the exam and X-rays he needs so we can finally find out what’s going on and how to help him feel better.

🐾

I’m still working toward the fundraising goal to help cover his care, but this means we can take the next step now. For those who know Jax, you know he’s not just a dog. He’s my best friend, my little shadow, and 15 pounds of fearless personality. Seeing so many people rally around him has meant more than I can put into words.

🐾

Thank you all for helping me take care of my little guy. Every donation, share, and kind message truly makes a difference. ❤️🐾

🐾

Facebook memories gave me a reminder today of the Jax I know and love. ❤️🐾

Four years ago, this little guy was doing one of his favorite things: completely ignoring the concept of normal sitting positions and lounging in the backyard with all four legs in the air like he owned the place.

🐾

That’s Jax.

🐾

15 pounds of shih tzu. 100 pounds of attitude.

🐾

He has always been fearless, goofy, and completely comfortable being exactly who he is. Seeing him struggle right now has been hard because I know how much he loves running around, exploring, and just being his silly little self.

🐾

Thank you again to everyone who has donated, shared, or reached out. Every bit of support is helping us get closer to finding out what’s going on and getting him back to feeling like himself again ❤️🐾
