Thank You for Your interest in my story.

I have lived for over twenty years in Hawai'i. Seven years on Maui and thirteen years on the Big Island. In 2009 I was diagnosed with "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (Asperger's).

In May of 2015, my life partner of five years died from a respiratory failure she experienced in December of 2014. As someone who had life threatening asthma at an early age, I was equally affected in 2018, when the Leilani Estate eruption began.

Our house in Leilani Estates could not be sealed off against the outside air.

Leilani Estates Eruption 2018 - Image: Hawai'i Volcano Observatory

My parents in Bavaria were extremely worried and convinced me to visit them, as I had not seen them in years. Following their wishes, my Felines and I arrived in Bavaria at the end of February 2018. After over 20 years Hawai'i, I was incompatible with the German way of living. When I told an acquaintence of mine in Uruguay about this situation, she invited me to stay at her farm in the guest house, for three month.

A few weeks after our arrival in May of 2018, my acquaintence had an accident while working with her horse. She was admitted to a hospital in the capital. Her husband wanted me to leave the guest house - asap. An immediate return to Bavaria was not possible. One of my Felines did not have a titer test for rabies.

Peteyboy without titer test.

It would take three month for the titer test from the University of Kansas to return to be able to return to Hawai'i. Things dragged on, as it was very difficult to find a veterinary in San Carlos that was able to perform the required blood draw. I fell into a deep depression. In January of 2019, I was hit by lightning while watering the plants of a neighbor I had helped with his newfound nursery. In June 2019, my beloved Feline Honeyboy died from hypothermia.

Honeyboy 2018

The small farmhouse I had to rent in order to wait out the time it would take to get ready to leave, had no proper heating. It was very cold and I got very sick with pneumonia. Finally, the titer test for Peteyboy was cleared and we were ready to leave. My father had bought me a ticket to return to Bavaria once more. He had fallen recently and needed help. My mother's dementia was progressing and her wish was for me to return. In August of 2020, I was denied boarding at Carrasco airport. There was an error in the health certificates for my Felines. Madrid had changed the time for connections due to the ensuing pandemic and I was unable to travel as booked.

In the aftermath of this nightmare, Peteyboy died of hypothermia, because we had to wait for three hours in the cold at the airport. When I called my parents to tell them what had happened, they were devastated. Then, the pandemic went full throttle in Germany and the U.S. - it was no longer possible to return to Germany, since Uruguay was on a "red alert" list, making entry coming from Uruguay impossible for me. The same was true for the States, as mandatory vaccination was now required. Due to health issues I can not get vaccinated.

In April of 2021, my father died a few weeks after having received the Moderna vaccine. He was heartbroken - with no hope for my return. My mother's dementia had severly progressed after the fact that I was unable to see her again. Three month after my father's death, she was admitted into a care facility for people with dementia.

My parents in 2018

Since my failed attempt to leave Uruguay, and without any support - as I had used up all of my funds - times turned from bad to worse. During this time I became homeless. A former neighbor had invited me to stay with him, but unfortunately, he was addicted. When I was offered to work for a recently started venture to create so called "River Tables", I agreed without hesitation, since I had forty years of experiences with resins and epoxy.

One of my creations - a River Table, 13 feet long and 4 feet wide

In another unfortunate turn of events, I found out that the owners of the venture were also addicted and I was neither paid fully the agreed upon salary, nor did I receive payments regularily. Despite working, I was starving and was unable to heat the small house we were living in. My last Hawai'ian Feline that had been with me 24/7 for 14 years, died after an attack by the neighbor's dog in January of 2022.

YinYang in 2018

Things deteriorated at the table shop and I became homeless another time. Since this time and until October 9th I stayed in a small room at my neighbors. It was a trade situation. The neighbors needed this room to be cleaned from fire damage, the damaged roof repaired, windows sealed and everything painted. I am no longer there with my two Uruguayan Felines that I had been given by a former friend. The two Boys are now with a former co-worker and I long for them to join me soon.

Felix (back) and Oscar now at a friend's place in San Carlos.

When the vaccination mandate was rescinded for the States, I wanted to immediately return to Florida, where one of my step children lives. She gave birth to another child August 27th and I wanted to be there for the occasion, but found out, that in all the insanity and distress, my German passport had expired. I found out that a valid passport is required. After several weeks, I received a new passport and was now able to return to the States. However, this is where this fundraiser becomes important. For ove three months, I have survived by doing odd jobs. The room we stayed in was a trade situation. I did everything required  since I had no other choice. But in the meantime, the family liked to get the room back, to house other family members in it. Since I would like to return to the States and ultimately to Hawai'i, this was no problem, but got rough at the end.

A friend of mine on the Big Island helped me with the airfare to Miami. From there I would like to visit my step daughter and her Baby-Boy. Since it will take three month for Felix and Oscar to be able to travel with me to Hawai'i, I am asking for help to get Felix and Oscar to Florida. It will be necessary to secure housing. It is my understanding now, that my Asperger's was at the core of the many difficulties that I had encountered throughout my life and especially during the last years, when I wanted to return home. Now I know, that it is much better to accept my condition as is and make the best of what I got.

I dedicate myself to help those who also suffer from ASD - to accept themselves as they are and navigate through a world that still is not fully accepting the consequences that come with this diagnosis.

I will keep You updated about how things are coming along. As a token for my gratitude for Your help - that is appreciated no matter how big or small it will be - I like to offer You images I have been taking as a professional photographer over the years in Hawai'i. You just email me and tell me what images You like and I will send You one. There are thousands of them - including images of Felines.

Thank You very much for reading my story. All the best to You.

Aloha pumehana,

Wolfgang Exel Watson, Felix and Oscar

Update on Saturday, November 18th, 2023

On November 8th, I arrived in North Port. It was such a pleasure to see my daughter again. It has been seven years since we saw each other the last time. Although I am still in the process to digest the physical assault in Miami and the subsequent nightmare, simply being with my daughter helped me to start the process of recovery. Seeing the family and the new member was equally uplifting. Even though the Baby-Boy has respiratory issues and creates challenging moments, being among loved ones is very therapeutic in itself.

For the first time in years, I was able to sleep. However, a few days in, the events of Miami caught up with me in a nightmare about what had happened. There has been a crucial revelation. Never before was I able to see the repetitive cycle of abuse in such clarity. What had happened was only the latest sequel in a long line of recurring situations. When I realized that the commitment to work at the restomod shop exceeded my abilities due to the traumatizing events of the last years, I told the owner of the shop that I am not able to perform in an environment, where I can't see what I am supposed to do.

There may have been a solution to this quagmire, but based on an event that happened on Friday the 3rd, I was unable to continue my commitment. There were disturbing observations prior to Friday, that culminated in the owner of the shop violently attacking an employee for reasons unknown to me. All I saw was the owner physically attacking a much smaller employee.

When I told the owner that I can no longer work under the conditions I was now fully aware of, he turned violent on me. Yelling at me and attacking me physically. Nowhere near the assault he unleashed on the young employee, but violently enough to show that I was right to leave. He hit me, pushing me on the ground and throwing my backpack out of the shop. I walked away without getting paid for the last work day. But I walked away. This was not what I had on my mind when I started working there.

When I returned to the hostel, I explained what had just happened - and was told that, if I could not pay, would have to get out of the dormitory. Another time I was threatened by homelessness and I used my last funds from this fundraiser to pay for the last night. Then my daughter got a hold of me and told me to come to North Port. She would pay for the bus fare. The following morning I left Miami and arrived in North Port by noon. This is where I am now and trying to figure out what is happening next. There is this tremendous unease about something going to be happening that will make it impossible to return to Hawai'i. It bears down on me hard. Because I would like to stay here for some time, close to my daughter, her husband and the grandchildren. This is the place commonly referred to as "between a rock and a hard place". And since a while now there are no answers. It is simply that I am sort of transported by the Universe - without knowing where the next step will lead me.

What I do know though, is the fact that I have $60 left. A very discomforting sensation that keeps me waking up and getting shocked like hit by lightning. I do not want to be a burden to my daughter and her young family. They have enough on their plate and I am sleeping in the grandson's bedroom. It is for that reason that my premonition is pushing me towards getting to Hawai'i as soon as possible. There is another discomforting aspect to all of this. With me continuing my way back to Hawai'i, I will practically be unable to have Felix and Oscar join me. Those who love their Felines as much as I do will know how depressing this prospect is. Even with it becoming more and more difficult to reunite with them, I am unable to let go of them. They are my loyal companions and have helped me to cope with the deaths of Honeyboy, Peteyboy and YinYang.

I have lowered the amount of funds I need to get back to Hawai'i in the hope that it might be easier to help me, knowing that I need less funds to return now. Although, I would have to create a new fundraiser asking for help with the costs of reuniting with my beloved Felines. You should however know by now, that I am doing everything I am capable of to make it on my own.

Thank You for Your understanding and support.

Welcome and thank You for being here. These are obviously difficult times. And some have to go through tremendous hardship, suffering and pain. It is my belief that we can only reform society by reforming the understanding of what a membership to it represents.

It has been a long time since someone stole cash from me. Then too, the circumstances were conducive to such an outcome. In retrospective it even appears as if orchestrated by a higher force. The $300 dollar loss is threatening me with homelessness. The only feasible way would be to leave to Hawai'i - where I can stay with friends. The threat of homelessness scares me to death and has plagued me for some time now - looking at the homeless people here with greatest compassion. However, I don't want to join them and even the modest living situation will bring about a much needed stability.
Over the last weeks, I had chances to read up on the effects ASD has on the professional life, on work life. Like in other areas, the same pattern emerged and it shows in many business transactions. Lacking the required numbers, I cannot say how I fare in relationship to others with a similar condition. Or to those without such variance.

Please consider helping me out in this double whammy situation. It would have been much easier without losing such a large amount in the early stage of re-establishing my simple life. But what should I do? Give up? No, I want to go the sustainable way. And I have been asking the Universe and all Saints related to these matters to please provide a means of generating sufficient income - doing work that is meaningful and productive.

In a few moments I will call my friend in Hawai'i about a last minute flight to Hilo, Hawai'i Island. A deep thank You to those who have already donated to this cause. And an invitation to follow this life on Substack, where it publishes observations, deductions and philosophical ideas.

Thank You for Your time and any size contribution.

Even Felix and Oscar can't comfort me now. I miss them so much.

Today's update is overshadowed by someone having stolen my week's wages of $300 and it creates a number of serious repercussions. As of now, I am quite overwhelmed with anxiety and panic. Even though I know this will pass, too. Maybe the reason for this stronger than usual response lie in the process to get stabilized and move on to Hawai'i.

Just like that I feel catapulted back into unfavorable emotions. What is one to do about that?

Any suggestions are most welcome.

Update from October 21st, 2023, Miami, Florida

This image shows the wiring of a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass that I have the honor to be fitting out with parts and repairing of the old/damaged wiring harness. It will be a challenge for sure, but also an opportunity for another experience to grow.

The last week was very challenging. My experiences with buses were reflective of that occurance of challenges. On Thursday night I failed to get to the store in time and ended up at First street - unable to travel any other way than on foot. When the session was over, I had followed the advice of a bus driver and took the train close to downtown to take a bus to get as close as four blocks to the store. However, it was already late and I ended up waiting for the southbound train that would not arrive - in spite of telling on a display, that the next train would arrive in three minutes, two minutes, one minute - and no train. That repeated itself for an hour and I decided to return to the bus, when a southbound train finally arrived. I was told to proceed to Allapattah and then take the 36 bus. But I got the wrong exit and could not see the bus stop. There were a lot of addicted people and also rats. I freaked out and went back up to take the next northbound train to get back to the bus that I use to get to work. Of this one I know where it goes. The challenging part of going by bus is the fact that buses come late, or not at all. When I finally crawled on the bus that was supposedly taking me to downtown, I overshot the destination by excessively numerous blocks. There were areas of heavy construction and I ended up walking back to the hostel. Through neighborhoods that one could rightfully call "difficult", to remain as understanding as possible. Also not to get political. Otherwise one will be ending up getting drawn into the need to help those worse off than oneself. This is another aspect of my own seeking for funds - to create the circumstances to help others in need. And of course most important:

To found the Cat Café and the accompanying refuge for animals - especially Felines - to do something in return for everything that was given to me. The Love of my two Boys for me is visible in all pictures. And as a good young/old friend of mine always said: "I love You more." To be without Felix and Oscar is very difficult. Anybody with deep love for their Animal Friends will know how hard it is to be without them - if they could be with You. It would certainly help me to stabilize with the Boys alongside. The transport is a finite amount of money, that is subject to changes without further notice. They will also travel alone, but they would be separated with me in the airplane. This is an important question: does the love we have for each other justify the means, that could be in the hundreds for each Boy. But there are direct flights and I can pick them up at Miami Airport. They will recover quickly. First, I have to get my own place to do resin and epoxy projects. A steady flow of income from what I can do. That is important. My health is in need of recovery.

Naturally, I should seek the reasonable approach. Taking it by the day. These are demanding times and if Hou are able to help us out with any amount You like.

Thank You very much and thank You for stopping by.

Technical difficulties keep rising. Some features of this website are no longer working for my eight year old iPad. So, I circumvent these hurdles by using what still works.

Thanking my donors works this way, and I would like to thank You, Carry, from the bottom of my heart. Your encouraging words mean the world to me. Your generosity helps me to get once more stabil grounds under my feet.

Now to the latest update that will show the progress that has been made. During the recent times in my life, I have realized that it is best to get the bad news out first. That way, the good news stick. While the other way around, the bad news somehow override the good news, if they come last. The bad news is, that I had to leave my two Boys behind. This has to be difficult for anybody that truly loves their furry companions. For those of us with neurological variances, it is devastating. Felix and Oscar have been my life savers since YinYang was attacked and subsequently died in January of 2022. They comforted me during times of utter hope and helplessness. With their adopted from the original characters' traits - Oscar Madison and Felix Unger from "The Odd Couple" - they were able to pull me out of deepest despair by clowning around and talking to me.

Our last day together - Felix and Oscar know something bad is about to happen...

Our veterinary had given me some pet calmers and I administered them ahead of their pickup. Unfortunately, the calmers did not calm them, but only made them stumble and cry. Now they knew definitively that something bad was about to happen and they cried really badly. Their temporary space created some hysteria in me. It cannot be described with words and if You would see pictures, You would be very concerned. But this was the only solution available and I know the family they are staying with. However, the impact the separation has on me is much stronger than I had anticipated, because I knew the people they are staying with - but I never saw the house inside.

There is another aspect rearing its head. While I was stuck in South America, I had severe health problems with the freezing temperatures there. I clocked minus -3°C in my bedroom. The houses down there have no heating, at least not the cheap ones. This constant exposure to damp cold gave me chronic pneumonia with its implications. Anybody that knows about the effects hypothermia has on the body, knows what I went through.

This is putting me in a difficult situation now. After all the nightmares I lived through over the last years, I finally arrived in Miami on Saturday. The change of temperature had an immediate effect on my mind. Although I experienced some chest pain and shortness of breath walking through the airconditioned part of the airport - it was way too cold for my comfort - when I got outside, I enjoyed the warmth of the night. It felt so good to be warm again. And this is where my new panic has its roots. I am invited to stay in the Ann Arbor area with a longtime friend of mine that I love very much. But I also know about the winter in Michigan. This scares me beyond words, since I know that I cannot stay indoors all of the time. When I visited my parents in Germany in 2018, I almost died outside my hotel - it had -20° C - I was fainting and without the help of a neighbor, I would have died right there. The neighbor helped me to get inside the hotel. My body no longer tolerates freezing cold. What should I do?

Since my situation has changed dramatically for the better, I am able to work right away. There are lots of job offers in Miami. With my qualifications, I should be able to get employment. Knowing my limitations due to my ASD now, it seems that I can talk about my limitations much better. There is a body shop that is looking for a detailer and I chose this opening, because I have the experience and qualifications to do this work flawlessly. At this point, I like to also recommend the movie "American Loser" with Seann William Scott, as it relates to my own experiences very much. Not into detail, but in general and there are jobs a person with ASD can perform without problems. Detailing cars is one of them. Cleaning has always been somthing I loved to do - because You see instant results of Your efforts. Especially when it comes to cars.

There is something else going on. For the longest time I have been contemplating about doing stand-up comedy. And miraculously, in the short time I am here in Miami now, this has gained strong momentum. Now I feel - similar to the character in the above recommended movie - that I can extract the important aspects and lessons of the recent times and talk about the essence of each experience. That flow has revealed itself in the first night here, when I talked to another guest in the hostel about how I got here. This flow is all inclusive, it seems as if everything is related to it, connected with it. Stand-up comedy might be the perfect way to share one's most challenging experiences and wrapping them up in humor - making fun about oneself's dealing with these experiences. Just short of being "speech therapy" with a wider audience. And knowing that we all have our bag to carry, relating to the daily dealings we are confronted with, makes for some humorous insights. With the finest examples of the trade leading the way, I may return to entertain folks like I did when I was young. Before I was put down by family and 'friends'.

So, yes, let me thank You for Your generous contributions and let me know what You think about this turn of events.
