My name is Ayman Kamel Abu Raida, a 55-year-old Palestinian with Iraqi citizenship. I came to Gaza to visit my family after living in Iraq for over 30 years, never imagining that my visit would turn into a nightmare when war broke out on October 7, 2024. Today, I find myself trapped in a humanitarian catastrophe, struggling to survive while also caring for orphaned children who lost their families in the war.
Famine in Gaza and the Struggle to Survive
Due to the ongoing siege and relentless bombardment, Gaza is facing an unprecedented famine. Food and water are scarce, and the prices of essentials have skyrocketed beyond what most can afford. Children go to sleep hungry, and families are barely surviving on minimal resources. Clean water is almost unavailable, leading to the spread of diseases and severe malnutrition. The situation has reached catastrophic levels, and every day is a battle to find the next meal.
Caring for Orphans in a War Zone
My goal is no longer to leave Gaza but to stay and care for the orphans and displaced family members who have lost everything. These children have no one left to support them. As ceasefire violations and bombings continue, we live in constant fear of losing our lives at any moment. I have been moving from one shelter to another in harsh conditions, with no source of income, desperately trying to keep these children safe and fed.
