The Potato Project
Winter has lost its grip, and spring is pushing nearer. The trees are swelling and will soon break into green leaves and fruit blossoms. With the arrival of warmer weather and longer daylight hours, hope again flickers in the eyes of many. They have survived the hard winter. Perhaps brighter days are ahead.
Many people are returning to their homes in the east because their area is safer now than it had been months ago. Others return because they have run out of money and can no longer pay for rent and utilities where they were living temporarily. Still, others return because, in spite of the danger and damage, there is no place like home.
For many people scattered across Ukraine, gardening is a way of life, a matter of survival. If they plant their gardens, Lord-willing, they will have something to eat. But this year, gardening is more than just work. It is an act of therapy. As people plant their gardens, they are planting hope. As they tend the tender plants, they are nurturing hope.
In the past weeks, we have been receiving requests for seed potatoes. People are returning home empty-handed. Others never left their homes, but the war and winter have robbed them of their resources. Now spring is arriving, and they want to plant their gardens and raise food to sustain their families. 
It will cost $20,000 to send 100 tons of seed potatoes to families in eastern Ukraine. Every $10 of seed potatoes has the potential to provide $50-$100 worth of food for the table.
