This is Buddy, he's an 8 year old Chihuahua Mix. We recently rescued him, he was a puppy mill dog who experience terrible abuse and neglect. He's been with us for two months now, and he's been adjusting and settling in really, really well!

But something happened. We were asleep; he jumped on the window sill of our 2nd floor apartment, and fell. He survived and only has one major injury- his right front ankle joint. Turns out, he dislocated, fractured and broke the joint in his right front leg.

Buddy is going to require surgery, otherwise he'll never walk right and could have other complications from it not healing properly, including arthritis and chronic pain. They need to remove certain pieces of the ankle joint, and replace them with a metal piece that will be fused with the rest of the bones in the joint. His vet is confident that with this surgery, he will be able to lead a long, happy life and won't be subject to chronic pain or suffering.

Surgery is expected to cost anywhere from $5,00-$5,500. We've already spent $1200 on diagnostics, Xrays, soft wrapping, and pain meds, and a surgical consultation. Unfortunately, we don't qualify for CareCredit or a personal loan, and insurances wont cover a pre-existing condition.

All donations are greatly appreciated. Buddy is a wonderful dog with a long, happy future ahead of him if we can get his ankle taken care of and fixed up for him. His surgery date is September 22nd, 2025, so we have to get the $5,500 before then!

Please help us take care of our best friend, our newest family member, our furbaby. He is our entire world and we need to get him fixed up, as soon as possible.

Update 7/21/25

The clock has started because Buddy's surgery has been officially scheduled. The Rico Fund which is the only fund to have approved us so far requires a scheduled date, so we got the surgery date confirmed with the vet's office today.

Buddy is due for surgery on September 22nd, 2025.

This gives us 63 days to gather an additional $5,000.

Our vet's office will not play ball with these grant programs we have been applying to, as many of these programs require your vet to fill out a bit of paperwork as well. Since our vet is unwilling to do this, we will not be able to rely on grant programs.

Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far, we appreciate all the love and encouragement and support! Please remember to follow Buddy on his social media (@whatalazybubba) as it's another way to support us while we attempt to raise this $5,000 we are currently short.

Update: 7/9/2025

We got our first approval! The Rico Fund, hosted by Fur Ever Friends in North Carolina has approved our request and is granting us $250.00 towards Buddy's Surgery!

Thank you so very much to the team at Fur Ever Friends for processing our request so quickly, and we appreciate the funds you are able to provide!

UPDATE: 7/7/2025

As of now we have applied to several fund and grant programs; the majority of which typically only rant a maximum of $500 if we get approved. We are prepared for the reality that we may not get approved for any of these programs, but we are also trying to be optimistic.

The programs we have applied to thus far:

  • Help-A-Pet - Mailed-In Application, no online applications
  • Petfund - Not Eligible, Wrong Injury Type
  • Brown Dog Foundation - Highest possible amount to grant, maximum of 2,000-2,500. Fingers crossed!
  • Paws 4 A Cure - Active communications from them, waiting on Vet's office to send back paperwork.
  • Violet's Fund
  • Mosby Foundation - 7/8 Denied
  • Frosted Face - 7/15 Denied
  • Grey Muzzles - Only for organizations/charities
  • Rico Fund - APPROVED! $250.00

Programs We Are Still Gathering Documentation For:

  • RedRover - Waiting on emailed receipts for proof of care received thus far
  • Frankie's Friends - Waiting on emailed receipts for proof of care received thus far

These programs send the money directly to the vet's office, so while we will be able to provide y'all with approval emails or letters, they won't show up as donations on this fundraiser. We will however adjust the fundraiser amount to lower by the amount of the approved grant. Every approval will result in an update to this fundraiser.

Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement!

UPDATE: 7/1/2025

Sad news, surgery is still required if he wants a pain free life, and Buddy not only wants, but deserves that. The more accurate estimate was changed to $5,000-$5,500. After surgery, he will be splinted or casted for 12 weeks, biweekly vet visits, monthly xrays. This is going to be a long process, but at least we have concrete answers and a solid estimate.

The next step is fundraising and applying for grant programs that may be able to help cover some of the costs, like RedRover and the Pet Fund. You can follow along the journey as I attempt to keep everyone updated on Tiktok: @whatalazybubba.

Thank you to all those who are supporting and encouraging us and Buddy throughout this process!

UPDATE: 6/28/2025

Buddy sees the surgical vet at Carolina Vet Specialists on July 1st at 11:30AM EST. This is a consult visit with a fresh set of Xrays to be done. The total estimated cost of the appointment is $750, and we were able to put together $460 ourselves in preparation for this appointment. To cover the rest of the fees, we have requested a payout on the $285 this fundraiser has gained so far.

Buddy has generally been a happy boy and tolerating his pain very well, he's been surprisingly mobile and active. His ankle is looking much better and the alignment of his foot is settling well. We are going to ask about Splinting the leg instead of surgery, pending the results of the Xrays.

Follow us on Tiktok @whatalazybubba for updates immediately following this vet visit.

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us!
