Serena Williams played her first Wimbledon 2016 match earlier today and beat the Swiss player, Amra Sadikovic.
Williams has won Wimbledon six times and she is the current titleholder, having won it last year.
When she’s not winning titles, Serena can be found working for UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador, focusing on education.
She became a Goodwill Ambassador after having travelled to Ghana for that country's biggest vaccination campaign.
During her 2006 visit, Williams followed doctors and volunteer workers vaccinate almost 6 million children against measles and polio, provide 5.4 million children with vitamin A supplements and hand out 2.1 million free insecticide-treated bed nets to families with children under the age of two.
Williams said the following after one of her trips to Africa, “kids can’t afford to go to school because their parents can’t afford to pay $1.00 a week. What would I have done if I did not have my education? I couldn’t see these young people just not attend school and damage their future; however I understood that their parents simply don't have the money for school.”
UNICEF believes that all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential - to the benefit of a better world.
We don’t all have to be tennis champions to support UNICEF. Drop a token today!
